Little children cannot always tell a stranger their full name, their teacher’s name, or their parent’s phone number. That is exactly why so many preschools, nurseries and kindergartens give each child a small ID card for backpacks, field trips and dismissal. This Preschool Student ID Card is bright, friendly and made for tiny people, and it quietly does a serious job for the grown-ups: the back is a pick-up authorization card listing the only adults allowed to collect the child, with allergies and emergency contacts beside it.
Crayons, a Rainbow Ring and a Big Friendly Name
Eight chunky crayons in red, orange, yellow, green, turquoise, blue, purple and pink hang down from the top edge of the card, each with its paper wrapper bands and a sharpened tip. It is the first thing a child will point at, and it makes the card instantly recognisable in a cubby full of bags. Under the crayons, SUNSHINE KIDS PRESCHOOL is set in rounded Fredoka lettering in navy, with Preschool · Pre-K · Kindergarten in orange.
The child’s photo sits in a big circle surrounded by a scalloped ring of rainbow dots, like a sunflower made of crayon colours. Below it, the child’s name is set large and friendly, Leo Martinez in the sample, with a green pill reading LITTLE LEARNER. A four-row table gives the student ID, the classroom (the Sunflower Room), the teacher’s name, and the school year. Our logo sits on a small white plate, and three wavy lines in red, yellow, and blue scribble across the bottom edge like crayon doodles.
Sized as a standard CR80 badge, 2.125 inches wide and 3.375 inches tall, the card fits clear luggage tags, lanyard sleeves, and backpack tag holders.
The Pick-Up Card on the Reverse
Dismissal is the most sensitive moment of a preschool day. The back of this card turns into a simple authorization record:
- PICK-UP CARD heading with the line Only these grown-ups may collect me.
- A real table with name, relation, and phone number for up to four adults, filled on the sample with mother, father, and grandmother, plus a blank row.
- Allergies (peanuts and bee stings on the sample), the family doctor, and an emergency number.
- A QR code labelled PARENT APP CHECK-IN, for schools that use an app for sign-in and sign-out.
- An If I am found alone note with the school’s phone number and the child’s classroom.
- Signature lines for the parent or guardian and the director.
What Each Part Does at a Busy Dismissal
| Card element | Who uses it | When |
|---|---|---|
| Child’s photo and name | Teachers, substitutes, bus aides | Every day, especially with new staff |
| Classroom and teacher | Front office, lost-child situations | Arrival, field trips, assemblies |
| Pick-up list | Staff at the door | Dismissal and early collections |
| Allergies and doctor | Teachers, lunch staff, trip volunteers | Snack time, parties, outings |
| If I am found alone | Any adult who finds the child | Field trips and public places |
Filling In a Child’s Card
- Photo: click inside the rainbow ring and use Replace Image. A cheerful head-and-shoulders photo against a plain wall works best; the circle crops it neatly.
- School name: type your preschool, nursery or daycare name over SUNSHINE KIDS PRESCHOOL.
- Child’s details: double-click the name and pill. You might change LITTLE LEARNER to PRE-K, NURSERY, or KINDERGARTEN.
- Tables: select the ID grid or the pick-up list and open Edit Data from the toolbar. Add another collector with + Row.
- QR code: use the Barcodes & QR panel to point it to your parent app or school website.
- Crayons: the crayon row is one group, so you can recolour or delete it in one step.
Keeping Young Children Safe With Their ID
Some thought goes into where a preschool ID lives. Many schools prefer the card clipped inside the backpack or on a luggage tag rather than around a small child’s neck, where a lanyard can catch on playground equipment. If you do use lanyards for field trips, choose breakaway ones. Think about privacy too: a child’s full address is not usually printed on a card that other people might see. The school phone number is enough for anyone who finds the child. Update the pick-up list whenever family arrangements change, and print a fresh card rather than crossing names out.
Daycares, Nurseries and Pre-K Programmes
The design suits preschools, pre-K classrooms, kindergarten classes, daycare centres, nursery schools, church and community playgroups, after-school programmes for young children and summer day camps for little ones. Childminders who take children on outings can also print one card per child, with their own number on the back.
Printing Crayon Colours Brightly
The rainbow palette looks best on bright white card or PVC. Print one test card first to check that the yellow crayon and the yellow dots in the ring are not too pale. For backpack tags, laminate the card, as little hands and rainy days are hard on paper. If you slide the card into a clear luggage tag, print both sides so the pick-up information can be read by staff at the door.
Making Cards for a Whole Class in One Afternoon
Directors often make twenty or more cards at once before the first day. The quickest way is to finish one card, with the school name, colours, QR link and signature labels, and then duplicate it for each child, changing only the photo, name, pick-up list and allergies. Ask families to send a recent photo and their pick-up list with the enrolment forms, so everything arrives together. Keep the finished files in a folder by classroom; when a child’s arrangements change mid-year, you can open their card, edit a row, and reprint it in a couple of minutes.
Preschool Parent and Teacher Questions
Can I print only the front?
Yes, but the back is where the important safety information lives. Most schools print both sides.
Can I add a second emergency contact?
Select the allergies and doctor table and click + Row, then type the extra contact.
What size is the photo circle?
About an inch across when printed, large enough for staff to recognise the child at a glance.
Open the template, add the child’s photo and the grown-ups allowed to collect them, and give every family a little more peace of mind at pick-up time.
