A Master’s Thesis represents a year or more of work, and its title page is the first thing your examiners, your library, and every future reader will see. It is also one of the most rule-bound pages you will ever produce. Graduate schools usually specify the order of lines, the wording of the degree statement, and sometimes even the spacing. This template follows the common structure most universities share and wraps it in a dignified forest green and gold design that looks at home in a bound copy on a library shelf.
Check Your Graduate School’s Manual First
Before you type a word, download your graduate school’s thesis formatting guide. Many universities publish a sample title page with exact wording, such as A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science. Some require the month and year of graduation rather than the submission date. Some forbid logos or colour on the official deposit copy. Use this design for review copies, presentation copies and printed gifts to your supervisor, and adapt it to match your official rules for the final deposit.
Layout of This Thesis Title Page
A deep forest green header spans the top, separated from the white page by a gold rule. Centred in the header is a round crest slot with a gold ring, then Crestwood University in spaced Cinzel capitals and School of Graduate Studies in italic. Below the header, the thesis title, Machine Learning Approaches to Early Detection of Diabetic Retinopathy in Low-Resource Clinics, is set large in green Cormorant Garamond. A short gold rule separates it from the degree statement: A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Data Science. Under that come by and the author’s name, Hannah Liu. A fine grey line leads to four details in two columns: Supervisor, Department, Student ID, and Submitted. A green footer band carries © 2027 Hannah Liu. All rights reserved. and the logo on a light plate.
Uploading Your University Crest
The circle in the header is a photo slot. Select it, choose Replace Image, and upload your university’s crest or seal. The image fills the circle and keeps its gold ring. Use a high-resolution file, ideally at least 600 pixels wide, so it prints sharply. Most universities provide official logo files on a brand or communications page; use those rather than a screenshot from the website. If your graduate school does not allow logos on the title page, delete the slot and move the university name up a little.
Wording the Degree Statement
The statement must name the exact degree, as it will appear on your diploma. Compare these:
- Master of Science in Data Science, not MSc Data Science or Masters in Data Science.
- Master of Arts in History, not MA History.
- Master of Engineering (Mechanical), if that is how your university styles it.
British-style universities usually write fulfilment; American ones write fulfillment. Match your institution’s spelling. Note that the template uses the British spelling in its sample text, so change it if you study in the United States.
Your Thesis Title on the Page
Thesis titles tend to be long because they must be precise. The title area fits about three lines at the size shown. If yours runs longer, reduce the size slightly or consider a title with a colon: a short main title followed by a descriptive subtitle. Avoid abbreviations unless they are universally known, and write out terms such as Machine Learning in full. Library catalogues and search engines will index your title, so include the keywords someone would search for.
A Thesis Title Page Proofreading Table
| Item | What to check | Common error |
|---|---|---|
| University name | Official full name | Using an abbreviation or nickname |
| Faculty or school | Name of the graduate school | Listing the department here instead |
| Title | Identical to the abstract and approval forms | Small wording differences between documents |
| Degree | Exact degree name | Abbreviating the degree |
| Author name | Legal name as in university records | Using a nickname or omitting a middle name |
| Date | Month and year required by the school | Writing a full submission date when only month and year are wanted |
| Copyright line | Year of submission and your name | Forgetting to update the year |
The Copyright Line in the Footer
In most countries, you own the copyright to your thesis automatically. Many graduate schools ask you to include a copyright notice, either on the title page or on the next page. The sample reads © 2027 Hannah Liu. All rights reserved. If your university wants a Creative Commons licence instead, replace the line with the licence name, such as Licensed under CC BY 4.0. If your school places the copyright notice on a separate page, delete the footer text and keep the green band as decoration.
Changing Green to Your School Colour
Forest green and gold suit many universities, but you might prefer navy and silver, maroon and gold, or black and gold. Select the header and the footer band and change their fill, then change the title colour to match. The gold rule under the header and the gold rule under the title can be recoloured separately. Keep the title dark enough to stay readable; very light colours look faded in print.
Printing and Binding Advice
The page is US Letter, 8.5 x 11 inches, the standard size for theses in the United States and Canada. Download as a PDF for your electronic thesis deposit, and check that your graduate school accepts colour on the title page of the PDF. For bound presentation copies, print on heavy, bright white paper, 28 to 32 lb, and leave the left margin generous; the design already keeps text away from the binding edge. A print shop can print the green bands edge to edge if you turn on bleed and crop marks when downloading.
Questions About Master’s Title Pages
Should my committee members be listed?
Some schools list them on the title page, others on a separate approval page. If yours needs them here, add their names under the supervisor field.
Can I use this for an MBA project or a professional master’s report?
Yes. Change thesis to project report or capstone and update the degree name.
Does the title page get a page number?
It usually counts as page i, but the number is not shown. Follow your graduate school’s numbering rules for the front matter.
