High school is where most students write their first real research paper: five sources, a thesis statement, in-text citations, and a Works Cited page. The assignment can feel big, so the cover should feel friendly. This one looks like a page from your own spiral notebook, with blue ruled lines, a red margin, your title written in neat handwriting, and a yellow sticky note stuck on the corner carrying a submission checklist. It is relaxed, but it is also organised, and teachers appreciate that.

A Notebook Page You Would Recognise

The background is a soft sky blue, and on it lies a white notebook page with a subtle shadow. Metal spiral rings run down the left side through punched holes. Blue ruled lines cross the page, and a red margin line runs down near the rings. At the top, Name: Jasmine Carter is written on the left and Period 4 on the right, in Kalam, a handwriting font. A small red label reads Research Paper, and the title, Should Schools Start Later? The Science of Teen Sleep and Learning, is handwritten in large blue letters across the lines, with a yellow highlighter stroke underneath. Four details follow on the ruled lines. In the lower right, a yellow sticky note, slightly tilted with a strip of tape at the top, lists a checklist. In the lower left, an orange pencil and ruler lie across the page, and the logo sits at the bottom right.

The Sticky-Note Checklist

The sticky note reads Checklist ? with four boxes: MLA citations, Works Cited page, 5 sources, and Peer edit done. These are the requirements most often listed in high school research paper rubrics, and the ones students most often forget. Change the items to match your teacher’s rubric. Some common alternatives:

  • Thesis statement highlighted
  • Outline approved
  • Note cards submitted
  • Turnitin check
  • APA reference list
  • Rough draft feedback applied

Before you print, replace each ? with ? for items you have finished, or keep the empty boxes and tick them with a pen; teachers enjoy seeing that you checked.

Name, Period and Class Details

High school covers usually need different details from college ones. This template uses Name and Period at the top, then Class (English 10 Honors), Teacher (Mr. David Nguyen), School (Lincoln High School), and Due date (March 18, 2027) on the ruled lines. Click any handwritten value to type your own; it stays in the handwriting font. If your teacher wants a student number, change School to Student ID.

From Topic to Thesis: A Quick Guide

Working thesisHigh schools should start at 8:30 a.m. or later because teens’ body clocks shift, and later starts improve attendance and grades.
TitleShould Schools Start Later? The Science of Teen Sleep and Learning

A question title like the sample works well for argumentative papers: it states the debate, and your thesis answers it.

Popular High School Research Topics

Good topics are narrow enough for five to eight pages and have reliable sources. Ideas that work well: whether phones should be banned in classrooms, the effect of social media on teen mental health, whether college athletes should be paid, the impact of fast fashion on the environment, whether the voting age should be lowered to 16, the benefits of four-day school weeks, and whether video games improve problem-solving skills. Choose one you care about; you will spend weeks with it.

Finding Five Good Sources

Teachers usually ask for credible sources, not just websites. Start with your school library’s databases, which often include Gale, EBSCO, or ProQuest collections for students. Look for articles from newspapers of record, government sites (.gov), educational institutions (.edu), and respected organisations. Use Wikipedia only to find leads, then cite the sources it links to. Keep track of every source as you go; building the Works Cited page at the end is much harder.

Making the Notebook Your Own

The notebook page, its lines, and the spiral rings are separate pieces. The ruled lines form one group and can be recoloured or removed; the rings are another group. Change the sky blue background to pink, mint or lavender for a different mood. The sticky note can become pink, orange, or green; it is a small group with the tape strip. The pencil and ruler illustration is an editable vector, so its colours can be changed from its swatches.

Using the Cover for Middle School or Freshman Papers

The design suits grades 6 to 12. For middle school, simplify the checklist to 3 sources, Bibliography, and Neat copy. For a freshman college composition class, change Period to the course section and the checklist to your instructor’s requirements. The handwritten style keeps the cover approachable at any level.

Handwritten Fonts and Readability

Kalam is a handwriting font designed to stay readable. At the sizes on this cover, it is easy to read, even printed in black and white. If your teacher prefers typed text, select the handwritten lines and switch them to Nunito, the clean font used for the labels. The design still works, though it loses some of its notebook charm.

Ink-Saving Tips for the Notebook Look

The page is US Letter, 8.5 x 11 inches. The sky-blue background prints as a light tint; to save ink, change it to white so only the notebook page details print. Export a PDF with Download As and print it at 100%. If your school printers are black and white, the cover still looks good: the lines, title, and sticky note will print in shades of grey.

High School Cover FAQ

Does MLA require a cover page?

No, but many high school teachers ask for one. Use it when your teacher does, and follow their instructions on the first page heading.

Can I add a picture related to my topic?

Yes, add a small image near the pencil, but keep the title and checklist clear.

Is this suitable for a history or science paper?

Yes. Change the class name and the checklist items.
