A capstone is the top stone of a pyramid, the final piece that completes the structure. That is exactly what a capstone project is: the last, biggest piece of work that brings a degree together. This cover takes the metaphor literally. Grey stone blocks stack into a pyramid, and an orange capstone sits on top. Next to it, a large photo panel shows your project, product, or prototype. The result is a cover that looks confident in a final presentation, an expo booth, or a portfolio.

Why a Literal Capstone Works

Capstone reports are read by faculty, industry partners, and sometimes recruiters. They are more like professional reports than essays, and a professional cover sets the right tone. The pyramid shows the idea at a glance: four years of courses as building blocks, your project as the piece that completes them. It is simple enough to be read from across a room on a poster or a printed report on a judging table. And because the motif is about completion, it suits the moment: this is the report you hand over when the semester, and often the degree, is finished. Students tell us they reuse the same cover image on their LinkedIn project entry and portfolio site, so the project looks consistent everywhere it appears.

Walking Through the Design

The page is dark charcoal. In the upper left, ten grey blocks in four shades are stacked in rows of four, three, two, and one. A bright orange triangle with a darker orange shaded face caps the top. In the upper right, a tall photo panel with an orange border fills the space beside the pyramid. Under the pyramid, an orange label reads Capstone Project, and the title, Reducing Food Waste in Campus Dining Through Demand Forecasting, is set in heavy white Montserrat. A grey line gives the report type: Final report · Senior Design Studio. Lower down, a slightly lighter charcoal card holds six details in two columns, and the footer runs a line of stages, Problem · Research · Solution · Results · Recommendations, beside the logo on a light plate.

Show Your Project in the Photo Panel

The tall rectangle to the right of the pyramid is a photo slot. Select it and choose Replace Image. Good choices are a photo of your prototype, a screenshot of your app or dashboard, a site photo, your team at work, or a product render. Portrait images fit best because the panel is taller than it is wide; a landscape photo will be cropped at the sides. The orange border stays in place when you replace the image, so the panel always looks framed.

Project Details for Faculty and Industry

  • Team/student: Olivia Grant, Ethan Brooks
  • Program: B.S. Industrial Engineering
  • Faculty advisor: Dr. Naomi Fischer
  • Industry partner: GreenPlate Dining Services
  • Course: IE 498 Capstone Design
  • Presentation date: April 22, 2027

The industry partner field is what makes this a capstone cover rather than a generic report.  Many capstones are sponsored by companies, hospitals, non-profits, or city departments, and naming the partner shows the project solved a real problem. If yours had no sponsor, change the label to Client, Community partner, or Project type.

Capstone Titles That Promise an Outcome

Capstone titles work best when they name a problem and the approach used to solve it. Reducing Food Waste in Campus Dining Through Demand Forecasting is a good model: the reader knows the goal (less food waste), the setting (campus dining), and the method (forecasting). Compare it with a vague title like Dining Services Project, which says nothing. Try the formula [Verb]ing [problem] in [setting] through [method]. Examples: Improving Patient Flow in an Outpatient Clinic Through Discrete-Event Simulation or Increasing Volunteer Retention for a Food Bank Through a Mobile Scheduling App.

A Five-Stage Story in the Footer

The small footer line, Problem · Research · Solution · Results · Recommendations, mirrors the structure most capstone rubrics expect. It reminds the reader, and you, that the report tells a complete story. If your program uses different stages, such as Define · Design · Build · Test · Deliver for engineering design or Assess · Plan · Implement · Evaluate for health programs, edit the line. It is plain text and can be changed in seconds.

Recolouring Stone and Capstone

The pyramid is a single group, so you can move or resize it in one go. To change the orange capstone to your school colour, ungroup the pyramid and recolour the triangle and its darker face. The orange label and photo border can follow the same colour. Bright accents work best on charcoal: try electric blue, lime, crimson, or gold. Avoid dark accents, which disappear against the background.

Printing for Expo Day

The page is US Letter, 8.5 x 11 inches. Dark backgrounds look excellent on screen and on a projector, which makes this cover a good first slide image as well. For printed reports, print on a laser printer for the most even charcoal, or order prints through a copy shop using Download As PDF with bleed and crop marks so the background reaches the edges. If you are printing many copies for judges, test one page first to check that the photo is bright enough on the dark page.

Capstone Cover Questions

Can I add the sponsor’s logo?

Yes, but ask permission first. Place it small in the details card or near the footer, never larger than your own title.

Our team has five members. Will the names fit?

List surnames only, or write the team name and put full names on the next page.

Is this suitable for a high school senior project?

Yes. Change Faculty advisor to Mentor and Program to School.
