Four Ways to Use a Discount Voucher at Christmas
A gift voucher with the words Special Discount on it can do more than one job. This design has fields for an expiry date and a voucher ID, so it can work as a gift, a promotion or a loyalty reward. Here are four ways businesses use it.
- A thank-you for existing customers. Hand one out with every purchase over a set amount, and set the expiry to a quiet week in January, when you want traffic.
- A gift for staff or suppliers. Fill in a discount such as 20 percent and give one to each person on your list.
- A flyer insert. Print a larger batch and slip them into shopping bags or letterbox drops. The unique voucher ID lets you see which ones come back.
- A raffle prize. Schools and clubs can write a service or a value on the paragraph line and offer it as a prize.
What the Voucher Looks Like
The card is landscape, 3.375 x 2.125 inches, the size of a credit card. The left third is a bright festive red with white snowflakes and tiny white fir trees along the bottom. In the middle of it is a picture of golden bells with holly leaves and red berries. A narrow green diagonal stripe separates it from the right side, which is white with faint grey rays spreading out like a sunburst.
At the top right is a SAMPLE LOGO. The word GIFT appears in green and VOUCHER in large white letters on a green band. Beneath the band, Special Discount is written in a red script. Under that is a small paragraph of placeholder text, then two fields: Expiration Date, pre-set to December 24, 202X, and Voucher ID, shown as a pattern of x characters. A phone number and email line completes the card.
Editing the Offer
Everything in the white panel is text you can click and change: the expiry date, the voucher ID, the paragraph and the contact line. Type your own offer in the paragraph, such as “Take 15 percent off any purchase in store.” The title typefaces are Abril Fatface and Work Sans, both from Google Fonts, so they stay available in the editor.
The red panel and its bells are artwork. If you would like a different look, replace the picture or recolour the green band and stripe.
Setting Sensible Terms
- Always give an expiry date, and change the placeholder December date to your real deadline.
- Number each voucher so you can check each code once.
- State if the discount cannot be combined with other offers.
- Keep the offer simple enough to read on a card this size.
Discount or Gift Value?
Decide first whether the voucher is a gift with a fixed value or a discount with a percentage, because they need different wording. A value voucher says “$20 off any purchase,” while a percentage voucher says “15 percent off one visit.” Keep the paragraph short and put any limit, such as one voucher per customer, in the same sentence. That way the cashier and the customer read the same thing, and arguments at the till become rare.
