A Thesis Cover That Looks Like a Finished Book
A thesis or dissertation cover is the first page a committee sees, and it sets the tone before anyone reads a paragraph. This design uses a bright yellow banner, a round photo window and a title set in large condensed capitals, alternating yellow and black. It suits master’s and doctoral students, especially in technical fields where a modern look is welcome, and it works for a bound copy or a PDF upload.
Reading the Sample Data Page
The template is filled with a worked example: a title about a scalable cloud based data analytics platform, an author called Jane Smith, a date of August 01, 2026, and a block that names a university, a department, the degree and a supervisor. Looking at the sample tells you the order most universities expect: title first, then author, institution, degree and supervisor, then date.
The Yellow Banner and the Round Photo
The page is 8.5 x 11 inches, portrait, one page. A slanted yellow banner crosses the upper part, with a logo area at its right. A circular photo of a laptop showing charts overlaps the banner. The photo is a picture, so click it and choose Replace Image to use a figure from your own research, a lab photograph or a campus view. Keep it relevant to the topic.
Title Lines in Yellow and Black
The title is split into three lines: the first and third in yellow, the middle one in black and larger. This helps a long title stay readable. Retype each line, keeping the most important words on the black line. If your title is very long, shorten the yellow lines and reduce the size by a point or two.
Author, University and Supervisor Block
Under the title, the author name appears above a thin yellow rule, followed by the university, the department, the degree and the supervisor. The sample names a real university, so replace it with your own institution and do not leave any other school’s name in a document that you submit. Check your university’s thesis guide too, since many require exact wording such as Submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of.
Checking the Rules of Your Institution
Some universities prescribe the cover layout, the font, the margins and even the paper colour. If yours does, treat this template as a design for a private copy, a conference version or a book edition, and follow the official front page for the version you submit. Ask the graduate office when in doubt.
Editing the Fields for the Thesis Cover
- Replace the logo area with your university crest, if allowed.
- Retype the title, author, department, degree and supervisor.
- Change the date to the month and year of submission.
- Swap the round photo for an image from your project.
Printing and Binding a Dissertation
For a bound copy, print the cover on 200 gsm card and check the left margin, because the binding takes about half an inch. The dark band at the foot prints heavily, so run a test. For a digital upload, export a PDF and make sure the fonts are embedded.
Front Matter That Follows a Thesis Cover
After the cover come the title page, the abstract, the acknowledgements and the table of contents. Many universities number these pages with small roman numerals and start normal numbers at the introduction. Keep one file for the whole thesis so that the numbering stays right, and export the cover as page one. Before the final upload, ask the library whether it wants the cover included in the PDF or submitted as a separate form.
