Roadside farm stands are a small joy of country driving: a table of eggs, sweet corn, tomatoes, and honey, often with an honor box and a hand-painted sign. For the farmer, the sign does a lot of work. It has to stop cars at speed, show what is for sale today, and explain how to pay when nobody is there. This Farm Stand Sign Template packs all of that into a design that looks like the front of a red barn, complete with white X-braced doors, a cream name plank, and a chalkboard price list.
A Barn Front Full of Information
The sign is 24 x 18 inches in landscape, the standard yard-sign size, big enough to read from a country road. The background is barn red with a thick white trim running around the edge. On the left and right stand two barn doors, each outlined in white with a diagonal white X brace, a crossbar, and subtle darker vertical planks. Across the top hangs a cream plank with two nail heads, carrying the farm name, HOLLOW CREEK FARM, in red Alfa Slab One, a sturdy slab-serif typeface with an old-fashioned farm feel.
Between the doors, FARM FRESH is set in large cream slab letters, with EGGS · PRODUCE · HONEY underneath. The centre of the sign is a price list styled like a green chalkboard, with a TODAY’S PRICES header in chalk yellow and six rows in cream text: farm eggs by the dozen, sweet corn, tomatoes by the pound, zucchini, raw honey and cut flower bunches. Below it, a cream card headed HONOR SYSTEM explains how to pay, with a QR code for card payments. A cream band at the bottom gives the opening hours and address, with a hen and her chicks on the left and our logo in red on the right.
Updating Today’s Prices
The price list is the editor’s real Table object, so it is quick to change as the season moves from strawberries to squash:
- Double-click the chalkboard table to open Edit Table Data.
- Type this week’s items and prices. Prices are text, so 3 for $2 and $4/quart both work.
- Add seasonal items with + Row, or delete rows for things that are finished.
- Change the header from TODAY’S PRICES to THIS WEEK or IN SEASON if you prefer.
The table keeps its chalkboard colours when you edit the text. If you want a lighter look, change the row colours from the table’s options.
What Sells Through the Season
| Season | Popular stand items |
|---|---|
| Spring | Eggs, asparagus, rhubarb, lettuce, bedding plants, honey |
| Early summer | Strawberries, peas, new potatoes, cut flowers |
| Summer | Sweet corn, tomatoes, zucchini, peaches, blueberries, sunflowers |
| Autumn | Apples, pumpkins, squash, cider, gourds, firewood |
| Winter | Eggs, preserves, Christmas trees, wreaths, honey |
Running an Honor-System Stand
Many small stands run unattended, trusting customers to pay. It works remarkably well when payment is easy and clear. Use a locked cash box bolted to the stand, with a slot for notes and coins, and empty it regularly. Keep the prices simple so people can pay without needing change, and offer a digital option: the QR code on the sign can link to a payment page, and you can select it and paste your link under URL/Website. A friendly line, such as Thank you for supporting our family farm, encourages honesty far more than a stern warning.
Personalising the Barn
- Farm name: click the cream plank’s text and type your farm or family name.
- Headline: change FARM FRESH or the line under it to match what you sell, such as PICK YOUR OWN, FRESH EGGS or PUMPKINS.
- Hours and address: edit the bottom band; add Self-serve if the stand is unattended.
- Colours: barn red is classic, but a sage green, navy or grey barn looks lovely too. The doors are grouped with their braces and planks.
- Hen: the hen and chicks are an editable vector with their own colour swatches; move them, resize them or swap in a different farm animal from the editor’s Elements panel.
Signs Along the Road
Drivers need a warning to slow down safely, so a single sign at the stand is rarely enough. Place a simple sign a few hundred yards before the stand in each direction, saying FARM STAND AHEAD or FRESH EGGS 500 FT, and keep this full sign at the stand itself. Make sure there is safe space to pull off the road, and check any rules about signs on the road verge. On busy roads, a second copy of the price sign at the table lets customers read prices while they choose.
Printing for Outdoor Life
Farm signs live outside through rain, wind and sun. Download the PDF and order a 24 x 18 inch aluminium composite or corrugated plastic sign with a UV laminate, which keeps the barn red from fading. Because prices change, many farmers keep the full sign permanent and print a US Letter copy of just the price table each week, laminated and clipped over the chalkboard area. Another option is to print the sign with an empty table and write prices with a chalk marker directly on the laminate.
Small Touches That Bring Customers Back
Farm stand customers are often regulars, and a little personality keeps them coming. Add a line on the honor card about what is coming next week, such as Peaches arriving Friday, and update it often. Post a photo of the sign on social media each time the price list changes, and customers will start checking before they drive out. Clean, well-organised signs signal clean, well-cared-for produce, which is exactly the message a farm stand wants to send.
Farm Stand Sign Questions
Can I remove the QR code?
Yes. Delete it and widen the honor-system text to fill the card; for example, Cash only, please use the green box.
Can the doors hold more information?
They are decorative, but you can place a small sign over one door, such as an OPEN or SOLD OUT card, if you print a separate panel to hang there.
Will it work for a market stall?
Absolutely. Change the bottom band to your market day and stall number.
Fresh from the Farm
Add your farm name, today’s prices and your payment details, and put the sign where drivers can see it in time to stop. A barn-red sign with a clear price list turns passing traffic into loyal, basket-carrying regulars.
