A Beware of Dog sign is a courtesy as much as a warning. Delivery drivers, meter readers, neighbours and visitors deserve to know before they open your gate that a dog lives there, and a clear sign gives your dog a little peace too. This Beware of Dog Sign Template uses the look of a classic safety sign, bright yellow with a black header and border, because that combination is recognised worldwide as a signal to pay attention, and adds a characterful dog illustration and a trail of paw prints so it does not look like it came from a factory.
Warning Sign Anatomy
The sign is 18 x 12 inches in landscape, a good size for a gate or fence where it needs to be read from the pavement. The yellow background is framed by a heavy black border with rounded corners. The top quarter is a solid black header with a yellow warning triangle and exclamation mark next to WARNING in tall yellow Anton capitals.
Below the header, a large white circle with a thick black ring holds a black dog’s head with pricked ears and a stern expression: unmistakably a guard dog. To its right, BEWARE and OF DOG are stacked in huge black Anton letters, with Dog on duty · Enter at your own risk in Oswald beneath. Along the bottom right, five black paw prints walk across the sign in a staggered trail. Our logo sits in the bottom-left corner, inside the border.
Wording Options from Serious to Friendly
| Tone | Main text | Sub-line |
|---|---|---|
| Serious | BEWARE OF DOG | Enter at your own risk |
| Informative | DOG ON PREMISES | Please close the gate behind you |
| Friendly | FRIENDLY DOG | But he may try to escape |
| Delivery | DOG IN YARD | Please leave packages at the gate |
| Humorous | DOG ON DUTY | The owner is the one to worry about |
Choose honestly. If your dog is gentle but likes to run out, please close the gate protects the dog better than a scary warning. If your dog is genuinely protective, say so clearly.
A Note on Liability
Dog owners often ask whether a warning sign protects them legally if their dog bites someone. The answer depends on where you live. In some places, a sign can help show that visitors were warned; in others it makes little difference, and a sign stating that a dog is dangerous could even be used as evidence that you knew of the risk. This template is a practical warning, not legal advice. If you are worried about liability, talk to your insurer or a local attorney, keep gates latched, and consider a delivery box outside the fence so couriers never need to enter.
Personalising Your Sign
- Change the text: click BEWARE or OF DOG to retype. BEWARE OF DOGS fits if you have more than one.
- Swap the sub-line for delivery instructions, your dog’s name (Rex is on duty), or a gate reminder.
- Recolour the dog: the dog head and each paw print are editable vectors. Recolour them from their colour swatches, or ungroup the paw trail to move single prints.
- Change the palette: black on yellow is the most visible; black on orange or white on red also work for warning signs.
- Add a photo: some owners like a photo of their own dog. Upload your photo, crop it to a head-and-shoulders shot, and place it over the white circle in place of the illustration.
Where to Mount It
Put the sign on the outside of every gate that leads to where the dog can roam, at a height where someone reaching for the latch cannot miss it. A second sign on the front door is useful if the dog is kept indoors. For houses with a side entrance used by delivery drivers and meter readers, that entrance needs a sign too. Keep the sign clear of plants and fence slats that could hide part of the message.
Printing for Outdoor Use
Download the PDF. The toughest option is an aluminium sign with a UV laminate at 18 x 12 inches, which can be screwed or zip-tied to a gate. Corrugated plastic is lighter and very affordable. At home, print on US Letter at fit-to-page size, laminate it, and fix it with cable ties through punched holes; the high-contrast yellow and black stays readable even at the smaller size. Bright yellow fades in years of strong sun, so replace the sign when it starts to look pale.
Helping Delivery Drivers and Visitors
Couriers and postal workers visit dozens of homes a day, and dog encounters are one of the biggest hazards of their job. A clear sign lets them make a safe choice, but a little extra planning helps even more. Add delivery instructions to the sub-line, such as: Leave parcels at the gate or ring the bell; we will come out. Put a small parcel box or shelf outside the fence. If you use online delivery services, add a note about the dog to your delivery instructions too; many drivers read those before they arrive. For guests, a quick message before they visit, such as text me when you are at the gate, means you can hold the dog while they come in.
Beware of Dog FAQ
Can I make it smaller for a mailbox or door?
Yes. Print it on US Letter or smaller; the layout scales down proportionally.
Can I use a different dog illustration?
Delete the head and add another dog icon or your own photo in the circle. Keep it simple and bold so it reads from a distance.
Is it suitable for businesses with guard dogs?
Yes. Many yards and warehouses use a sign like this at every gate; change the sub-line to your company’s instructions.
Should the sign face the street or the yard?
Always the street, or whichever side a visitor approaches from. The whole point is that people read it before they touch the gate, so mount it on the outside face at latch height.
Protect Visitors and Your Dog
Pick your wording, set the tone, and hang the sign where every visitor reaches first. A clear warning keeps everyone safe, from the courier to the curious neighbour to the dog doing its job.
