Make the Headline and the Small Print Agree

This coupon promises two different things. The big number on the right says 20% OFF YOUR TOTAL PURCHASE. The line on the left says Purchase one (1) eligible turkey or ham weighing 10 lbs or more and receive $10 off your total purchase. One is a percentage, the other a fixed amount, and a customer at the till will choose whichever is larger. Before you print, pick a single offer. Options:

  1. Keep the dollar offer, and change the right panel to $10 OFF YOUR TOTAL PURCHASE, with the code adjusted.
  2. Keep the percentage, and rewrite the paragraph to say “Take 20% off your total purchase when you buy a turkey or ham of 10 lbs or more.”
  3. Run a two level offer, such as $10 off for 10 pounds and 20 percent off for 15 pounds or more, with separate coupons.

Mustard Gold With a White Offer Panel

The coupon is 6 x 3 inches in landscape. The left two thirds are a rich mustard gold covered with red, orange and golden leaves around the corners. A black tag reads HAPPY THANKSGIVING! in white. Beneath it, Turkey or Ham is written in a black script, with PURCHASE COUPON in black capitals. A small paragraph gives the rule, and a black box at the bottom says TERMS & CONDITIONS APPLY.

The right third is white. A gold 20 and a percent sign with OFF, the line YOUR TOTAL PURCHASE, a framed box showing COUPON CODE THANKS20, the line Valid until: December 30, 20XX and a barcode picture finish the panel. The expiry date is a month after Thanksgiving, which is unusual for a turkey coupon, so retype it to end on or before the holiday.

Why Weight Matters

The 10 pound rule encourages bigger purchases. A ten pound bird serves about eight to ten people, which is the family dinner size. If your customers shop for smaller households, set a lower weight or add a second coupon for turkey breasts and small hams. The phrase one (1) eligible turkey or ham limits the discount to one purchase, which is a clear and useful condition.

Which Birds Are Eligible?

  • Fresh and frozen turkeys, or only one of them.
  • Smoked hams, spiral hams or fresh hams.
  • Organic or specialty birds, which may carry their own price.
  • Pre-cooked or prepared options, which you may want to exclude.

Print a small sign at the meat counter that lists the eligible items so that staff and customers know.

Dates: Reach Early Shoppers

Turkeys are often bought one to two weeks before Thanksgiving, especially frozen ones that need time to thaw. A coupon that starts in early November and ends the day before Thanksgiving gets people through the door while stocks are full. Retype the date accordingly.

Printing and Use

Print on 200 to 250 gsm card stock and keep coupons near the meat counter, at the till and in flyers. The barcode picture is a sample, so replace it with your own or delete it. Three fit down one letter sheet.

What Counts as the Total Purchase

The coupon says the discount applies to the total purchase. Decide what that includes: the bird alone, the whole basket, delivery charges or tax. Write the rule in one line, such as “Discount applies to the cost of the whole basket before tax.” It helps cashiers apply it consistently and customers understand what to expect.
