The Thanksgiving Shopping List as a Coupon
For grocers and supermarkets, the week before Thanksgiving is one of the biggest of the year. People buy turkey, stuffing mix, cranberries, sweet potatoes and trimmings in one big shop, and prices are on everyone’s mind. A coupon that names these foods on the card speaks directly to that list, and it makes the offer feel generous without covering the whole shop.
Layout and Colour
The coupon is 6 x 3 inches in landscape. A soft cream background with speckled texture carries large red, orange and yellow maple leaves around the left edge and a few more at the lower right. A rounded golden panel fills the right side, with a huge red 25 and a percent sign, a small SAVE tag, and the line ON YOUR THANKSGIVING FEAST! beneath. A framed box shows USE CODE THANKS25, and a line says Expires: November 27, 20XX, with a barcode picture at the bottom.
On the left, Thanksgiving is written in a black script above GROCERY SHOPPING in gold and COUPON in large gold capitals. A line says Valid on: Turkey, Stuffing Mix, Cranberries, Sweet Potatoes, and more! and a gold button says TERMS & CONDITIONS APPLY.
Decide the List Carefully
The coupon names five food groups, and customers will assume they are all covered. Keep the list accurate, and replace it with the actual items you are discounting. If the discount is on the whole basket, say so. If it covers selected items, write “on selected Thanksgiving items” and put signs in the aisle. A shopper who finds that cranberries are excluded will feel misled.
| Approach | How to write it |
|---|---|
| Whole basket | 25% off your Thanksgiving shopping, up to $150 |
| Named items | 25% off turkey, stuffing, cranberries and sweet potatoes |
| Spend threshold | 25% off when you spend $100 on the feast list |
The Terms Button
The small gold button says TERMS & CONDITIONS APPLY, but the card does not list any. Add a few lines in small type, or point to a poster in the shop. Typical terms for grocery coupons include one use per customer, no cash value, and excluding alcohol and tobacco where the law requires. Check local rules about coupons on certain goods.
Date and Year
The sample expiry is November 27, 20XX. Thanksgiving falls on the fourth Thursday of November, which is 26 November in 2026, so an expiry of the 25th or 26th gives shoppers just enough time. Retype the date and include the year.
Handing Out the Coupon
Coupons can be inserted in weekly flyers, handed out at the till and offered to customers who sign up to a loyalty list. For online grocery orders, send a code by email.
Printing the Cream and Gold Grocery Coupon
Use 200 to 250 gsm card stock, and replace the barcode picture with a real one if your tills scan. Print them in a single column, three to a letter sheet.
Pairing the Coupon With a Recipe Card
Grocers can add value by printing a simple Thanksgiving recipe on the back of the coupon or on a matching card, such as a cranberry sauce or sweet potato casserole. Shoppers then buy the ingredients as a set. A recipe turns a discount into an idea, and the ingredients named on the front of the coupon already match the dish.
