Children love Diwali for the same reasons adults do: the lights, the colours, the sweets, but they love it loudest. A kids’ Diwali party is a chance to let them paint diyas, make rangoli, wave sparklers (carefully), and run around in new clothes with their friends. This invitation is written for parents planning exactly that kind of afternoon, and this guide is written for those parents.

What Children See on This Invitation

The card is a 5 x 7 inch portrait invitation set on a deep indigo night sky dotted with tiny gold and white sparkles. Two star-shaped paper lanterns, called kandils, hang from the top edge: a pink one on the left and an orange one on the right, each with a flower medallion at its centre and colourful paper streamers dangling below. In the middle, the word Kids appears in sunny yellow Chewy lettering, Diwali in big bubblegum pink Baloo 2, and PARTY! in spaced aqua capitals.

Under the title, three rounded badges list the activities: Diya painting, Rangoli colouring, and Sparkler fun, in pink, yellow, and aqua. Then come the date, time, and address in white, a small RSVP line, and a safety note. A rainbow rangoli in pink, purple, orange, yellow, and teal rises from the bottom edge, and the Office Templates Online mark sits in the corner in soft lavender.

Why Kandils for a Kids’ Party

Kandils, also called akash kandil or sky lanterns, are hung outside windows and balconies across Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa and Karnataka during Diwali. They are often made by hand with bamboo sticks and coloured paper, which makes them a natural craft for children. Putting them on the invitation hints at the fun to come and gives you an easy party activity: making paper star lanterns.

A Parent’s Plan for the Activity Stations

The three badges on the card can be your party plan. Here is how to set each one up so the afternoon runs smoothly.

StationWhat you needAgesTime
Diya paintingPlain clay diyas, acrylic paints, brushes, glitter glue, newspaper to cover the table4 and up30 minutes plus drying
Rangoli colouringPrinted rangoli outlines, crayons or coloured sand, small bowls3 and up20 minutes
Sparkler funSparklers, a bucket of water, gloves, adult supervisors6 and up with an adult15 minutes at dusk
Lantern craft (optional)Coloured card, tape, string, LED tea lights7 and up40 minutes

Change the badges on the card to match the stations you choose. Click a badge’s text to rename it; the pill shapes are ordinary shapes you can recolour.

Sparkler Safety Belongs on the Invitation

The card includes the note Sparklers only with grown-ups next to the RSVP line. Keep it, or strengthen it. Parents appreciate knowing in advance, and it saves an awkward conversation at the door. Practical rules for the day:

  • Light sparklers outdoors only, away from decorations, dry leaves, and clothing that trails.
  • One sparkler per child at a time, held at arm’s length, with an adult beside each small group.
  • Drop finished sparklers into a bucket of water straight away; the wire stays hot for a long time.
  • Use LED candles inside the diyas painted at the party, especially for younger children.
  • Tie back long dupattas and loose sleeves before any flame activity.

If you would rather avoid flames altogether, change Sparkler fun to Glow stick dance and keep the same pill colour.

Filling In the Party Details

  1. Click the white details lines and type the day, time, and address. Two lines are the right amount.
  2. Replace Aarav’s house with your child’s name, so friends know whose party it is.
  3. Update the RSVP name and phone number.
  4. If the party has a theme or a dress code, such as Wear your Diwali best, add it after the RSVP in the same small lavender style.

The sample date is Saturday, November 7, 2026, the day before Diwali. An afternoon slot from 4 to 6 PM lets children enjoy sparklers as it gets dark and still be home for dinner.

Making the Invitation Match Your Child

Children like to feel the party is theirs. A few easy changes:

  • Change Kids to your child’s name: Myra’s Diwali Party!
  • Recolour the kandils to your child’s favourite colours. Each is an editable vector; select it and change its swatches.
  • Change the night sky to deep purple or teal by clicking the background.
  • Delete the orange kandil and enlarge the pink one if you prefer a single lantern.

Printing for the Classroom and Friends

Download the invitation as a PDF and print it on 5 x 7 card, or print two per US Letter sheet and trim. The dark background needs a good quality setting on inkjet printers; a print shop will give the richest indigo. If you are handing invitations out at school, check the school’s policy first; many ask that invitations go to the whole class or are given outside school.

Sending to Parents on WhatsApp

Most kids’ party invitations now go to parents’ phones. Download a JPG and send it individually or in the class parents’ group. Add a short line with the RSVP deadline, and ask parents to mention allergies, since Diwali sweets often contain nuts and dairy.

Party Bag Ideas to Mention

If you like, add a line at the bottom saying Every child takes home a diya they painted. Children love a take-home craft more than plastic toys. Other Diwali-friendly favours: a small box of mithai, a mini rangoli stencil kit, a paper kandil, or a colouring book about the festival.

Kids Diwali Invitation Questions

What age is the design suited to?

It works best for children from about three to ten. For teenagers, the black and gold night party invitation in this collection feels more grown-up.

Can I add my child’s photo?

Add a circle shape from the Elements panel between the lanterns, use Replace Image to put the photo in it, and move the title down slightly.

Can I use it for a school Diwali event?

Yes. Change Kids Diwali Party to Class Diwali Celebration, replace the address with the classroom, and swap the activities for school-safe ones.

Let the Little Ones Light Up the Evening

Fill in the details, print a stack or send them out, and start gathering clay diyas and paint. With the lanterns hung and the activities planned, the party is half ready already.
