A cookie swap is a clever kind of party. Every guest bakes a big batch of one kind of cookie, and everyone goes home with a tin full of many different kinds. It saves hours of holiday baking, introduces everyone to new recipes, and fills a December afternoon with tea, chatter, and sugar. This 5 x 7 inch invitation is designed like a handwritten recipe card from a family kitchen, complete with a red gingham header, blue ruled lines, a pink margin and an INGREDIENTS list that tells guests exactly what to bring.

A Recipe for a Good Time

The card is written as if it were a recipe. RECIPE FOR A GOOD TIME sits in small red capitals at the top, followed by the title Christmas Cookie Swap in a handwritten Kalam font. The date and place sit below it like a recipe’s serving information. The INGREDIENTS heading introduces four checkboxes: 3 dozen homemade cookies, copies of your recipe, an empty tin to take some home, and your best holiday apron. The RSVP line ends the card in red handwriting. Two iced cookies, a star and a gingerbread man, sit in the bottom right corner as if they have just come out of the oven.

How a Cookie Swap Works

Each guest bakes several dozen of one kind of cookie and brings them on a plate or in a tin. At the swap, cookies are laid out on a long table by type. Guests walk around with an empty container and take an equal share of each kind, so everyone leaves with a mix. Many swaps also share recipes, so guests can bake their favourites again. A typical rule is that everyone brings about three dozen cookies, which works for a group of around twelve people; for bigger groups, adjust the number or let people take a set number of each type.

Choosing the Right Amount

To work out how many cookies each guest should bring, multiply the number of guests by the number of cookies each person should take home of each kind. For example, with twelve guests taking three of each kind, each baker needs thirty-six cookies, which is three dozen, as on the sample card. Add an extra dozen for tasting at the party. Change the first checklist item if your numbers are different.

Recipe Cards and Labels

Asking guests to bring copies of their recipe is what turns a cookie swap into a tradition. Guests take home not only cookies but the ability to bake them again. Suggest that everyone write their recipe on a small card or print copies, with their name and any allergens noted. Some hosts collect all the recipes afterwards and send a digital booklet to everyone. Labels on each plate, naming the cookie and listing nuts, dairy, or gluten, help guests with allergies choose safely.

Editing the Recipe Card Invitation

Click the date line and address line to change them; the sample is Saturday, December 5, 2 PM, at the Walsh kitchen. Edit the ingredients list by clicking each item; keep each item short so it fits on one line. You can add a fifth item by copying a checkbox and its text. Change the RSVP name and number. The gingham header is a grouped pattern; change its colour to green or blue for a different look. The cookies are editable vectors with their own colour swatches.

Cookie Ideas That Travel Well

Encourage bakers to choose cookies that hold their shape and keep for a few days. Shortbread, gingerbread, snickerdoodles, chocolate crinkles, linzer cookies, biscotti, peanut butter blossoms, sugar cookies, and oatmeal cranberry cookies all work beautifully. Avoid very soft or cream-filled cookies that crumble or spoil quickly. A quick message in the group chat about who is baking what helps avoid three batches of the same recipe.

Hosting the Swap

Set up a long table with a cloth and small cards for labels. Provide extra containers, bags and ribbon for guests who forget their tin. Offer tea, coffee and something savoury, such as cheese straws or sandwiches, because a table of cookies is a lot of sugar. Play Christmas music and have some aprons ready for photos. Some hosts add a vote for the best cookie, with a small prize such as a wooden spoon or a cookie cutter.

Packing Cookies to Take Home

Guests often take home a lot of cookies, so encourage sturdy tins or boxes. Separate layers with baking paper, keep soft and crisp cookies apart so the crisp ones stay crunchy, and store them in a cool place. Most cookies keep for about a week in an airtight tin, and many freeze well, which means the swap can supply treats for the whole holiday season.

Printing the Cookie Swap Recipe Card

Download a PDF and print on 5 x 7 card. A slightly textured or cream card enhances the vintage recipe look. Home printers handle this design well, because most of it is light. You can even print a stack of blank recipe cards in the same style for guests to write their recipes on at the party by deleting the text and keeping the ruled lines.

Sending It to Friends

Download a JPG and send it by text or in a group chat. Ask guests to reply with the cookie they plan to bake, so you can keep variety.

Cookie Swap Questions

Can I change it to a candy or fudge swap?

Yes. Change the title and the ingredients list.

Can I print it on letter paper?

Yes, print at actual size and trim, or print larger as a poster for a community swap.

When is the sample swap?

Saturday, December 5, 2026, early in the month so cookies are ready for the holidays.

Do not forget a few spare aprons for guests who want a photo in festive kitchen style.

Bake, Swap, Share

Choose your recipe, fill in the details, and send the invitation. A kitchen full of friends and a table full of cookies is a sweet way to begin December.
