Friendsmas is Christmas with the people you chose. Before or after the family gatherings, friends get together for their own celebration: a potluck dinner, a gift swap, too many drinks, and the same jokes as last year. It has become a beloved tradition for students, young professionals, people who live far from family, and anyone whose friends feel like family. This 5 x 7 inch invitation is bright and playful: a teal background with confetti scattered around the edges, a party hat and a popper at the top, and Friendsmas! in large red Lobster lettering with a cream offset shadow.

What Is a Friendsmas Party?

The word combines friends and Christmas. A Friendsmas party is usually informal and personal. Some groups cook a full Christmas dinner together, each person bringing a dish. Others host a cosy evening with games and a gift exchange. Many hold it in early or mid-December, before people travel home for the holidays. The point is not perfection but connection; it is a celebration of the people you see every week and want to honour at the end of the year.

A Cheerful, Colourful Design

The design avoids the traditional red and green palette to feel modern and fun. The teal background is bright and friendly. Confetti in red, yellow, cream, and light blue, made of small rectangles and dots, is scattered around the edges and kept away from the centre so the text stays clear. A gold party hat and a gold popper bursting with streamers sit at the top. It appears in yellow Lobster above Friendsmas!, and a white italic line describes the party as a Christmas party for our chosen family.

A rounded cream card in the lower half holds the details: the date and time in teal capitals, the address, and a playful red italic note asking guests to bring a dish, a gift for the swap, and their worst Christmas jumper. A yellow line below the card says RSVP in the group chat, a nod to how friends actually organise things.

Ideas for a Memorable Friendsmas

There is no fixed format, which is part of the charm. A few ideas that work well:

  • Potluck dinner: the host roasts the main dish, and everyone brings a side or dessert. It feels like a real Christmas dinner without the stress.
  • Gift swap: set a small budget and play Secret Santa or White Elephant.
  • Traditions: a group photo in the same spot each year, a toast to the year’s best moments, or a playlist where everyone adds one song.
  • Games: charades, a trivia quiz about the group’s inside jokes, or a cracker pulling contest.
  • Dress code: ugly jumpers, matching pyjamas or full festive glam, depending on your group.

Editing the Friendsmas Invitation

Click the date line in the cream card to change the date and time; the sample is Saturday, December 12, 7 PM. Change the host and address lines. Rewrite the red italic note to describe your plan, for example, Dinner provided, bring a bottle and a $20 gift. If you organise by email or another app, change RSVP in the group chat to a name and number. The confetti is grouped, so you can recolour or delete it in one step, and the party hat and popper are editable vectors.

Making Everyone Feel Included

Friendsmas is often especially meaningful for people who cannot be with their families, perhaps because of distance, work, or difficult relationships. Make it welcoming for everyone. Keep the gift budget low or optional, offer vegetarian and non alcoholic options, and invite friends of friends who might be alone for the holidays. A simple toast thanking everyone for being there can mean a great deal.

Recolouring for Your Group

Click the background to change the teal. Hot pink, deep purple, or navy all work with the red title and cream card. If you prefer a classic look, change the background to forest green and the confetti to red and gold. Make sure the title and its shadow stay readable against the new colour.

Food Plan for a Friendsmas Dinner

When friends cook together, coordination matters. Decide the main dish, then let the group chat claim the rest. A good balance for eight to ten people is the main, three sides, a salad, bread, two desserts and drinks. Ask each person to bring their dish in something easy to serve from, and set the table the night before so you are not rushing when guests arrive.

Printing Friendsmas Keepsake Cards

Most Friendsmas invitations travel by phone, but a printed card makes a lovely keepsake. Download the PDF and print on a 5 x 7 card with full bleed. Glossy paper makes the confetti look extra bright. Hand them out at your next get-together or tuck one into a card.

Sending It in the Group Chat

Download a JPG and drop it into your group chat with a message that sets the tone, for example, Friendsmas is back; start planning your worst jumper. Pin the message so the date is easy to find. Update the group as people claim dishes.

Friendsmas Questions

Can I change Friendsmas to another word?

Yes, for example Friendsgiving in November or Galentine’s in February, though you may want to change the confetti colours to match.

Can I add a group photo?

Add a circle from the Elements panel above the title and use Replace Image to place last year’s group photo.

What date is the sample?

Saturday, December 12, 2026, two weeks before Christmas Day, which falls on a Friday.

Starting a Friendsmas Tradition

The best Friendsmas parties become annual events with their own little rituals. Take the same group photo in the same spot every year and print it for everyone. Keep a guest book where friends write a highlight of their year. Pass a silly trophy, such as a gold-painted bauble, to whoever wins the games. Over time, these small habits become the moments everyone looks forward to, and the invitation itself can become part of the tradition if you keep the same design and change only the year.

Celebrate Your Chosen Family

Fill in the details, send the invitation, and start planning the menu. The best Christmas traditions are the ones you build together, and Friendsmas is one worth keeping.
