Few things bring out friendly competition like a Christmas trivia night. Teams huddle over answer sheets, someone insists they know how many reindeer pull Santa’s sleigh, and the winning team celebrates as if they won the World Cup. Quiz nights are popular in pubs, community halls, schools, churches, offices, and living rooms. This landscape 7 x 5 inch invitation looks like a pub chalkboard: a deep green board in a wooden frame, chalky Permanent Marker and Patrick Hand lettering, a teaser question, and a team scoreboard drawn as a real table.

A Chalkboard Look

The background is a soft green chalkboard, framed by a thick wooden border with an inner groove. Christmas is written in white chalky Permanent Marker, with TRIVIA NIGHT beneath in yellow. Below, a teaser question in pink chalk asks how many gifts there are in the Twelve Days of Christmas, followed by a playful answer: Come find out! The party details are written in white Patrick Hand, a handwriting-style font, with a yellow line about prizes. On the right, a scoreboard table lists teams such as Elf Help, Sleigh Belles, and Yule Fools with their scores, ending with Your team? and a sign-up number. A set of white bells finishes the board.

The Teaser Question

The question on the invitation, How many gifts in the Twelve Days of Christmas?, is a classic puzzle: the answer is 364 if you add up every gift across all twelve days. Teaser questions on invitations get people talking before the event, and some will arrive having already argued about the answer. Change the question to any fun Christmas fact, such as Which country gave London’s Trafalgar Square Christmas tree? or What is the best-selling Christmas single of all time?, but keep the answer a mystery until the night.

Planning a Christmas Quiz

A good quiz night has five to eight rounds of ten questions each, with a mix of topics so every team has a chance to shine. Christmas-themed rounds might include Christmas films, songs and lyrics, traditions around the world, food and drink, general knowledge with a festive twist, a picture round of film stills or famous Christmas album covers, and a music round where teams name the song from a short clip. Finish with a tiebreaker question that requires a number, so the closest answer wins.

Running the Night

Teams of four to six work well. Give each team answer sheets and pens, and announce the rules at the start: no phones, the quizmaster’s decision is final, and answers are marked between rounds. Read each question twice, clearly. Keep a scoreboard on a real chalkboard or a screen, updated after each round to keep the competition lively. Allow a short break halfway for drinks and food.

The Scoreboard Table

The scoreboard on the invitation is an editable table with Team and Score columns, styled like chalk on a board. Double-click it or choose Edit Table Data to change team names and scores. Use it to show last year’s top teams, playful sample team names, or the teams already signed up. Add rows with + Row if you want to list more teams.

Editing the Trivia Invitation

Click the details lines to change the date, venue, team size, and price. The sample reads Friday, December 11, 7 PM, The Crown and Anchor, 14 High Street, Annapolis, Teams of up to six, $5 per player. Update the prize line and the sign-up number. The bells and the frame can be recoloured, and the board colour changed to black for a classic slate look.

Prizes and Fundraising

Prizes keep teams motivated. Ideas include a trophy, bottles of wine, chocolates, vouchers from local shops, or a festive hamper. Many quiz nights raise money for charity, with an entry fee per player and a raffle at half time. If yours is a fundraiser, add a line naming the cause on the invitation.

Team Name Ideas

Funny team names are part of the fun, and many quizzes give a prize for the best one. Christmas puns are perfect: Elf Help, Sleigh Belles, Yule Fools, The Mistletoes, Quiz Kringle, Rudolph’s Rejects, Snow Way and Tinsel Town. Mention the best name prize on the invitation to encourage creativity.

Hosting at Home

A home trivia night works with as few as eight players. Divide guests into teams, serve snacks and drinks, and use a television or laptop to show picture and music rounds. A family quiz with mixed-age teams, children paired with grandparents, is a lovely Christmas Eve or Boxing Day tradition.

Printing the Chalkboard Invitation

Download a PDF and print at 7 x 5 inches with full bleed, so the wooden frame reaches the edges. The green board prints well on matte card. For a pub or hall, print larger copies at letter or poster size to display behind the bar or on notice boards.

Promoting a Public Quiz Night

For a pub or community quiz, share the invitation as a JPG on social media and in local groups, and post it in the venue. Ask teams to book in advance so you know how many tables to set up.

Trivia Night Questions

Can I change the teaser question?

Yes. Click the question and answer lines and type your own.

Can I use it for a New Year quiz?

Yes. Change Christmas to New Year and update the details.

Is the wooden frame editable?

Yes. It is a thick outline; change its colour or width.

Writing Fair Questions

Good quiz questions have one clear answer, are neither too easy nor impossibly hard, and are interesting even to people who get them wrong. Check every answer against a reliable source before the night, avoid questions whose answers have changed recently, and read questions aloud during preparation to catch confusing wording. Include a few easy questions in every round, so no team feels lost. Mix in questions that reward older and younger players differently, such as classic carols and recent Christmas hits, so mixed age teams have the advantage.

May the Best Team Win

Write your questions, fill in the details, and send the invitation. A Christmas trivia night is a guaranteed evening of laughter, rivalry and festive fun.
