Someone has stolen the Christmas pudding, and the butler was found under the tree. A Christmas murder mystery dinner party turns guests into suspects and detectives for an evening of clues, costumes, and theatrical accusations. It is one of the most memorable party formats, perfect for groups of friends who love games and dressing up. This 5 x 7 inch invitation looks like a confidential case file: a worn paper folder on a black background, a magnifying glass examining a red Christmas ornament, typewriter text and a red TOP SECRET seal.

A Case File Design

The main panel is an aged cream paper sheet, slightly tilted, with a tab labelled CASE NO. 1225, a nod to Christmas Day. Above it, A Christmas appears in typewriter style Special Elite, and MURDER MYSTERY in bold red Abril Fatface. In the top right corner, a gold magnifying glass with a brown handle examines a red ornament. The story teaser on the file is typed in Special Elite: Someone has stolen the Christmas pudding, and the butler was found under the tree. Join us in costume for a dinner of clues, suspects, and one very guilty guest. The case details follow: WHEN, WHERE, and DRESS, and the RSVP goes to Detective Clark. A round red seal stamped TOP SECRET sits on the lower right of the file.

How a Murder Mystery Dinner Works

A murder mystery party is a role-playing game played over dinner. Each guest receives a character before the party, with a costume suggestion and secret information. During the evening, the story unfolds in rounds, often between courses: clues are revealed, characters question each other, and everyone tries to work out who committed the crime. At the end, guests make their accusations, and the culprit is revealed. Ready-made murder mystery game kits are widely available, including Christmas-themed ones, with character booklets, clues, and instructions for the host.

Sending Character Cards

The invitation’s DRESS line says your character card arrives soon. A week or two after the invitation, send each guest their character with a short description and costume ideas. Christmas-themed characters might include a grumpy elf, a glamorous carol singer, a nervous butler, a rich uncle, and a suspicious snowman sculptor. Encourage guests to stay in character and to keep their secrets until the right moment.

Planning the Evening

A murder mystery dinner usually lasts three to four hours. A typical plan includes welcome drinks while guests introduce their characters, the starter with the first clues, the main course with questioning and new evidence, dessert with final clues, then accusations and the reveal. Keep the meal simple enough that the host can play too, or ask a friend to manage the kitchen. Dim lighting, candles, and a crime scene in the living room, perhaps an empty pudding plate with a chalk outline, set the mood.

Editing the Case File

Click the story teaser to write your own crime, keeping it to about three lines. Change the case details lines: WHEN, WHERE, and DRESS. The sample is Saturday, December 19, 7 PM, at Ravenswood Manor, the Clarks’ home. Update the RSVP line with your detective name and number. The case number can be changed to anything, such as the date of the party. The ornament and magnifying glass can be recoloured, and the seal colour changed.

Costume Ideas

Costumes make the evening. For a Christmas mystery, suggest 1920s style evening wear for a country house theme, Victorian dress for a Dickensian mystery, or festive characters such as elves, reindeer and carol singers for a light-hearted game. Encourage simple props: a monocle, a feather boa, a fake moustache, or a Santa hat with a detective badge.

Printing a Mysterious Invitation

Download a PDF and print at 5 x 7 inches with full bleed. A textured cream or kraft card enhances the case file look. For extra drama, seal the envelope with red wax or a TOP SECRET sticker, and write the guest’s character name on the front. Black envelopes look striking with this design.

Sending Case Files Privately

Download a JPG and send it individually rather than in a group chat, which keeps the mystery alive. Follow up with each guest’s character privately.

Murder Mystery Tips for Hosts

Read the game instructions thoroughly before the party, and prepare all clues in labelled envelopes. Choose a game designed for your number of guests, and have a backup plan if someone cancels, such as a character who can be played by the host. Keep the tone fun and avoid anything too dark for your group.

Mystery Invitation Questions

Can I change the crime?

Yes. Rewrite the teaser to match your game kit’s story.

Can I add a photo of the host?

Add a rectangle on the file and use Replace Image, styled like a mugshot.

Is the seal editable?

Yes. Change its text or colour, or delete it.

Choosing a Murder Mystery Kit

Murder mystery kits come in many styles, from downloadable PDFs to boxed games with props. When choosing one for a Christmas party, check the number of players it supports and whether extra characters can be added or removed, the age suitability, the length of play, and whether it suits a dinner format with rounds between courses. Christmas-themed kits often feature country houses, Victorian settings, or the North Pole. Read reviews from other hosts, and buy the kit early, so you have time to send characters a couple of weeks before the party.

Decorating the Crime Scene

A few props make the mystery feel real. Use crime scene tape across a doorway, an empty pudding plate with a chalk outline on the dining table, numbered evidence markers made from folded card, and a magnifying glass on the sideboard. Dim the lights and use candles in old candlesticks for a country house feel. Play mysterious instrumental Christmas music in the background. These touches cost little but help guests slip into character the moment they arrive.

Who Stole the Pudding?

Fill in the case details, send the invitation, and start preparing the clues. A Christmas murder mystery dinner is an evening your guests will be talking about until next December.
