Selling a car privately usually starts with an online listing, but a simple sign in the car’s window still works hard. Every time the car is parked at work, at the supermarket, or on your street, dozens of people see it, and some of them will be looking for exactly that car. The difference between a sign that gets calls and one that gets ignored is information: buyers want the year, the mileage, and the price before they bother to call. This Car for Sale Sign Template puts all of that on a clean, sporty sign with a checkered-flag border.
Sporty, Readable Layout
The sign is US Letter in landscape, 11 x 8.5 inches, which fits a rear side window or the back windscreen and prints on any home printer. A black-and-white checkered strip, like a racing flag, runs across the top, with a finer checkered strip along the bottom. FOR SALE is set in big red Anton letters between two black car icons facing each other.
On the left, a vehicle details table with a black VEHICLE DETAILS header lists the essentials in two columns: year, make and model, mileage, engine, transmission, colour, and title. On the right, ASKING sits above the price, $12,500, in large red numbers, with our best offer underneath. A black box holds the phone number in white. Below it, a QR code sits beside Scan for photos & service history. A short italic line under the table lists selling points (Runs great · New tires · Service records available), and our logo sits in grey above the bottom strip.
What to Put in the Details Table
| Row | Example | Why buyers care |
|---|---|---|
| Year | 2018 | The first filter for most buyers |
| Make & model | Midsize Sedan LX | Include the trim level |
| Mileage | 68,400 miles | Affects value and reliability |
| Engine | 2.0L 4-cylinder | Economy and performance |
| Transmission | Automatic | Many buyers only drive one type |
| Color | Silver | Helps them picture it |
| Title | Clean, one owner | Builds trust immediately |
Filling In Your Car’s Information
- Double-click the table to open Edit Table Data and type your car’s details in the right-hand column.
- Add rows with + Row for features such as Drive: AWD, Fuel: 34 mpg highway, or Seats: 7.
- Click the price to type yours; change or best offer to firm if you are not negotiating.
- Enter a phone number you will answer, or a text-only number.
- Select the QR code and link it to your online listing or a photo album under URL/Website.
- Edit the italic line with two or three selling points.
Pricing Your Car Realistically
Before you print, research what similar cars are selling for. Compare online listings for the same model, year, and mileage in your area, and use a well-known vehicle valuation guide for a private-party price. Price slightly above the lowest amount you would accept to leave room for negotiation, and say or best offer if you are flexible. A realistic price on the sign brings serious buyers; an unrealistic one brings silence.
Safe Selling Tips
- Meet buyers in daylight, in a public place, or bring a friend if they come to your home.
- Go with them on the test drive, and check their driving licence first.
- Accept secure payment, such as cash counted in person or a bank transfer confirmed before handing over keys.
- Complete the title transfer and any bill of sale your state or country requires.
- Remove the sign as soon as the car is sold so the calls stop.
Where to Display It
Tape the sign on the inside of a rear side window facing out, where people walking past at eye level see it clearly. Avoid the driver’s side windows and anywhere it blocks your view while driving; some places restrict signs that obstruct windows, so keep your driving visibility clear. When parked at home, a second copy on the windscreen, removed before driving, catches the attention of people walking by.
Printing and Protecting the Sign
Print on US Letter at actual size in landscape. Bright white paper keeps the black and red crisp. Sunlight through glass fades printing quickly, so print a spare copy or slip the sign into a clear sheet protector. For a sign facing out through glass, use clear packing tape along the edges on the inside of the window. If you also sell online, download a PNG to add as the last photo in your listing; it summarises the details neatly.
Beyond Cars
The same layout works for motorcycles, boats, trailers, campers, golf carts and farm equipment. Change the icons, edit the table rows to fit, and adjust the headline if needed, for example, BOAT FOR SALE.
Getting the Car Ready for Viewers
The sign brings buyers to the car, and the car itself has to do the rest. Before you put the sign up, wash the car, vacuum the interior, and remove personal items from the glovebox and boot. Gather service records, the owner’s manual, and both keys, since buyers value a complete history. Fix small, cheap problems such as a blown bulb or a worn wiper blade. Have the title ready so you can close the sale quickly when the right buyer arrives, and know your lowest acceptable price before the first call.
Car Sale Sign FAQ
Should I include the VIN?
Many buyers like having it to check the vehicle history. You can add it as a table row, or share it by phone or through the QR-linked listing.
Can I add a photo of the car?
The car itself is behind the sign, so a photo is not essential. Put photos in the online listing linked from the QR code.
Is the checkered border editable?
Yes. Each strip is a group; recolour it or delete it for a plainer look.
Can I use it for a dealership lot?
Yes. Add your dealership name to the phone box and print one sign per vehicle, changing only the table and price.
Turn Parking Spots into Showrooms
Fill in your car’s details, set a fair price, and tape the sign in the window. Every car park becomes a showroom, and the right buyer may be the next person to walk past.
