Shelf talkers are the small signs that hang from the edge of a shelf, right next to the product. They catch shoppers’ eyes as they walk down an aisle and point them to the deals. On Black Friday, when customers are scanning for bargains, shelf talkers turn ordinary shelves into a treasure map. This sheet gives you three bold talkers to print, cut, fold, and tape.
What Is on the Shelf Talker Sheet
The sheet is US Letter, 8.5 x 11 inches, with a short instruction line at the top. It holds three long horizontal talkers, each the width of the page. Above each talker is a grey fold tab reading FOLD HERE · TAPE TO SHELF, separated from the talker by a dashed line. Dashed cut lines run between the talkers.
The first talker is bright red with a darker panel on the left reading DOOR BUSTER and BLACK FRIDAY in white. On the right, NOW ONLY sits above a large $49.99, with while supplies last in the corner. The second talker is black with yellow text: HOT DEAL on the left, SAVE UP TO above a large 50% OFF, and today only in the corner. The third talker is yellow with black text: SALE on the left, NOW above a large dollar sign with a blank line for writing a price, and limit 2 per customer in the corner. A small logo mark sits at the bottom of the sheet.
How to Make the Shelf Talkers
- Print the sheet on card stock so the talkers stay stiff.
- Cut along the dashed lines, keeping each tab attached to its talker.
- Fold the grey tab back along the dashed fold line.
- Tape the tab underneath or to the front edge of the shelf, so the talker hangs or stands in front of the product.
For shelves with price channels, slide the tab into the channel instead of taping it.
Three Talkers, Three Purposes
| Talker | Best for |
|---|---|
| Red Doorbuster | A specific doorbuster price on a key product |
| Black Hot Deal | A category or shelf with a percentage discount |
| Yellow write-in Sale | Prices you fill in by hand on the day |
Print several sheets and mix the talkers across the store, using red for the best deals so they stand out most.
Editing the Talker Text
Click any text to edit it. Change $49.99 to the doorbuster price, 50% OFF to your discount, and the small corner notes to your terms. The left panels can carry other labels, such as TOP PICK, GIFT IDEA, or LAST ONES. Keep labels to one or two short words so they stay large.
Writing on the Yellow Talker
The yellow talker has a blank price line after the dollar sign. Use a thick black marker for clear, readable numbers. Write-in talkers are handy when prices change during the weekend, or for one-off items like floor models. Keep a stack and a marker near the stockroom for quick updates.
Where Shelf Talkers Work Best
- at eye level on the main aisle shelves;
- on end caps, the shelves at the ends of aisles that shoppers see first;
- on fridges and freezers in grocery stores, using tape suited to cold surfaces;
- on display tables, folded into a tent instead of hung.
Avoid putting too many talkers in one place; if every shelf shouts, none stand out.
Matching Talkers to Products
A shelf talker must sit right next to the product it describes. If a talker drifts to the wrong shelf, customers may expect the wrong price at the till, which causes frustration. After restocking, check that each talker is still in the right place. Many stores do a quick talker check before opening each day of the sale.
Changing Shelf Talker Colours
Red, black and yellow are classic, high-visibility sale colours. To match your brand, recolour the talker backgrounds and the left panels together. For a grocery store, green and white might suit; for a pharmacy, blue and white. Keep strong contrast between text and background, since talkers are read from a few steps away.
Pricing Accuracy on Shelf Signs
In many places, the price shown on a shelf sign must match the price charged at the till. Double-check prices before printing, and update your till system at the same time. If a mistake happens, honour the shelf price or fix it quickly; accurate signs protect trust in your sale.
Shelf Talkers for Small Shops
Small independent shops can use shelf talkers to highlight staff picks, local products, or gift ideas during the sale, not only discounts. A yellow talker reading Staff pick: under $25 can be as effective as a percentage off, especially for gift shoppers.
Removing Talkers After the Sale
When Black Friday prices end, remove the talkers promptly. Customers who see an old talker may expect the sale price. Keep any undamaged talkers flat in a folder; with new prices, they can be reused for other promotions.
How Many Talkers to Print
Walk the store with a notepad before printing and count the shelves that need a talker. Add a few extra of each style for replacements, because talkers get knocked, bent, or taken by curious children over a busy weekend. As a rough guide, one or two talkers per aisle section keeps the message strong without cluttering the shelves.
Combining Talkers With Other Signs
Shelf talkers work best as part of a family of signs. Use the same red, black, and yellow on your window sign, store hours sign, and price tags, so customers recognise Black Friday deals wherever they look. A shopper who sees a red DOORBUSTER talker after a red doorbuster poster at the entrance immediately knows they have found one of the advertised deals.
Shelf Talker Questions
Can I make the talkers smaller?
Yes. Reduce each talker’s height and fit four or five per sheet.
Can I print on coloured card?
The talkers are already coloured, so white card gives the truest colours.
Can I add a product photo?
Add a small photo on the right side of a talker, next to the price, for a richer sign.
The right sign in the right spot can sell a product on its own. Print your talkers, fill in the prices, and turn every aisle into a path to your Black Friday deals.
