The student teaching practicum is where teacher training becomes real. For weeks or months, a trainee plans lessons, manages a class, marks work, and learns from a mentor teacher, usually while still completing university coursework. When the placement ends, the trainee needs proof that it happened and was completed satisfactorily, and the host school wants to thank them properly. This certificate does both, with a three-way sign-off that reflects the partnership behind every practicum.

The Design at a Glance

The certificate is US Letter landscape (11 x 8.5 inches). A deep green column runs down the left side, separated from the page by a thin gold line. At the top of the column is a white mortarboard with a gold tassel; the word PRACTICUM runs vertically down the column in spaced Cinzel capitals, and Class of 2026 sits at the bottom in gold italic.

The right side reads Certificate of Completion in gold capitals above the title Student Teaching Practicum in green Libre Baskerville. This certifies that introduces the trainee’s name in Great Vibes script over a gold rule, followed by a paragraph describing the placement. A pale green details panel holds four lines: Placement school, Grade/subject, Dates and Hours completed. Three signature lines follow, for the Mentor Teacher, the Principal, and the University Supervisor.

Three Signatures, Three Roles

A practicum involves three parties, and the certificate gives each a place:

Mentor teacher: The classroom teacher who hosted the trainee day-to-day, observed lessons, and gave feedback. Their signature confirms the trainee’s actual classroom work.
Principal: Confirms the placement took place in the school and that the trainee met the school’s professional expectations.
University supervisor: The tutor from the teacher-education programme who visited, assessed, and linked the placement to the degree requirements.

If your programme uses different titles, such as cooperating teacher, host teacher, field supervisor or practicum coordinator, simply edit the role labels.

Recording Hours and Dates

Many teacher-licensing bodies require a minimum number of practicum hours or weeks. The Hours completed line makes that number explicit. Calculate it from the school’s attendance record for the trainee rather than from the planned timetable, so absences are accounted for. Write dates in full (for example, 13 January to 4 April 2026) to avoid confusion between day-month and month-day formats, especially if the certificate may be read in another country.

What to Say in the Completion Paragraph

The sample text mentions professional conduct, thoughtful lesson planning, and a growing command of the classroom. Tailor it to the trainee’s real strengths, which can make the certificate a useful reference for their first job applications:

  • …demonstrating creative use of hands-on science activities and excellent rapport with students.
  • …showing particular strength in supporting English language learners in a Grade 3 classroom.
  • …taking full responsibility for two Year 9 mathematics classes during the final four weeks of placement.

Keep the tone positive and factual. Detailed evaluation belongs in the formal practicum report, not on the certificate.

Filling In the Practicum Details

  1. Type the trainee’s name and edit the completion paragraph.
  2. Fill in the four detail lines, either by typing into the editor or by hand after printing.
  3. Update Class of 2026 at the foot of the column to the trainee’s graduating year, or replace it with the name of the teacher-education programme.
  4. Change the green column to your university’s colour if the certificate is issued jointly with a college. The mortarboard is a small group of shapes in white and gold, easy to recolour.
  5. Edit the signature names and roles.

Printing and Signing

Print on US Letter landscape at Actual size, or on A4 with Fit to page. Because three people sign, it is best to print on good 200 gsm paper and collect the signatures in person during the final week of placement, starting with the mentor teacher. If the university supervisor cannot sign in person, many programmes accept a scanned signature added digitally before printing. Give the original to the trainee and keep a copy in the school’s placement file.

Timing the Presentation

The best moment to present the certificate is during the trainee’s final week, while they are still with the class. A short farewell in the classroom, where the mentor teacher hands over the certificate and the students say goodbye, gives the trainee a memory of the students they taught rather than an envelope in the post weeks later. If the university supervisor’s signature is still needed, present a copy on the day and send the fully signed original afterwards. Schools that host several trainees each year often hold a brief end-of-placement gathering where all trainees receive their certificates together with their mentors present.

A Gesture That Matters to New Teachers

Student teachers work long hours for no pay, often while juggling assignments and part-time jobs. A formal certificate, presented at a staff meeting or in front of the class they taught, tells them they were a real member of the team. Many trainees keep these certificates for years; some frame them in their first classroom. Consider adding a handwritten note on the back from the students, or pairing the certificate with a class photo.

Other Placements It Suits

With small wording changes, the design works for teaching assistant placements, internships in school counselling or special education, early childhood placements, and short observation placements for students considering teaching as a career. Change the title to Teaching Internship or School Placement and adjust the completion paragraph.

Practicum Certificate FAQs

Is this an official university document?

It is a certificate of completion from the host school. Universities issue their own transcripts and assessments; this certificate complements them.

Can the column show a different word?

Yes. The vertical text is editable; INTERNSHIP or PLACEMENT fit in the same space.

What if there is no university supervisor?

Delete the third signature line, or relabel it as Head of Department.

Welcome to the Profession

A practicum is the first real step into teaching. Mark it with a certificate that honours the trainee’s work and the partnership that made it possible.
