Every year on 5 October, schools around the world celebrate World Teachers’ Day. It is a day to recognise not only individual teachers but the profession itself: the millions of people who, in every country and circumstance, open doors for children and young people. A certificate is a simple, dignified way to mark the day in your own school.
About World Teachers’ Day
World Teachers’ Day was established by UNESCO in 1994. It commemorates the signing, on 5 October 1966, of the ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, an international standard setting out the rights and responsibilities of teachers and the conditions they need to teach well. Each year UNESCO and its partners choose a theme, and schools, unions and education ministries hold events to celebrate teachers and discuss the challenges they face.
Many countries also have a national teachers’ day on a different date. A few well-known examples:
| Country | National teachers’ day |
|---|---|
| India | 5 September |
| China | 10 September |
| Indonesia | 25 November |
| United States | National Teacher Day, the Tuesday of Teacher Appreciation Week in May |
The certificate’s ribbon is editable, so the same design works whichever date your school celebrates. Some schools even choose to mark both days: a national celebration led by students and an international one led by staff, parents and families together.
The Design: A Globe at the Centre
This certificate is US Letter landscape (11 x 8.5 inches). A deep blue band runs across the top, carrying the words CERTIFICATE on the left and OF HONOUR on the right in white Cinzel capitals, with gold subtitles World Teachers’ Day and Celebrating Educators beneath them. Breaking over the bottom edge of the band is a blue globe with white latitude and longitude lines and soft green landmasses, outlined in white and lifted by a gentle shadow.
A gold ribbon banner with notched tails crosses the bottom of the globe, reading 5 OCTOBER. Below it, presented with gratitude to introduces the teacher’s name in elegant Pinyon Script, a gold rule, a short tribute, and three signature lines: Head of School, Date, and PTA President. A slim blue band with a gold line closes the foot of the page.
Suggested Messages for the Day
The sample tribute speaks of opening windows onto the world, fitting the globe. Other ideas you can use:
- On World Teachers’ Day, we celebrate your commitment to every learner who walks through your door.
- Thank you for teaching not only subjects, but courage, curiosity and kindness.
- Your work reaches further than you know: into homes, communities and the future.
- With gratitude from a school community that is better because you are part of it.
Ways Schools Mark the Day
A certificate is often the centrepiece of a wider celebration. Some ideas that work in primary and secondary schools alike:
- Students take over the morning assembly to thank staff.
- Each class writes a thank-you letter to a teacher in another country, connecting with the global spirit of the day.
- Senior students teach a short lesson to younger classes, then reflect on how hard it is.
- Parents and the PTA provide a staff lunch.
- Every teacher receives this certificate, signed by the head of school and the PTA president.
Personalising and Editing
- Click the teacher’s name and tribute text to type your own.
- Change the ribbon date if you celebrate your national teachers’ day instead.
- Replace the three signatories’ names and roles. You might use Student Council President instead of PTA President.
- The globe and ribbon are grouped into a single illustration, so they stay aligned; select the group to move or recolour it.
- Change the header band from blue to your school colour if you like; the gold accents suit most dark colours.
Connecting the Day to Your Curriculum
World Teachers’ Day is also a chance to teach students something. Geography classes can locate the countries whose teachers’ days fall on different dates and discuss why. History classes can research famous teachers, from Anne Sullivan to Confucius. Language classes can learn to say thank you, teacher, in several languages and write them on a banner. Younger pupils can interview a teacher about why they chose the profession. These activities make the certificate presentation feel like the natural end of a day of learning about learning, and they help students see teaching as a career they might one day choose.
The globe on the certificate is a perfect prompt for these discussions: every one of those countries has teachers doing the same essential work.
Printing the Blue Header Band
Print on US Letter landscape at Actual size, or on A4 with Fit to page. The blue header band is the main area of solid colour, so check your printer has enough ink before printing a full set for the staff. A 200 to 250 gsm white cardstock gives a crisp finish. For a quick digital version, download the PNG and include it in an email to all staff on the morning of 5 October.
Making One for Every Teacher
Because World Teachers’ Day celebrates the whole profession, many schools prefer to give a certificate to every member of teaching staff rather than choosing one winner. Prepare the design once, then change the name for each teacher and download the files. Office staff can handle a staff of forty in well under an hour, and teachers appreciate receiving a personal certificate rather than a generic note.
