Every school has one: the teacher who figured out the new learning platform first and then showed everyone else, the one who started the robotics club, or the one who uses data to spot which students need help before anyone else notices. Innovation in teaching is not about gadgets for their own sake. It is about finding better ways to help students learn, and then sharing those ways with colleagues. This award celebrates that mindset.

A Modern, Tech-Inspired Design

This US Letter landscape certificate (11 x 8.5 inches) breaks away from traditional certificate styles. The whole page is a deep midnight blue. In the top left and bottom right corners, circuit-board traces in cyan and violet run in straight lines and sharp angles, each ending in a small circular node, as if the certificate itself were a printed circuit.

At the top centre glows a light bulb: a dark glass bulb with a bright cyan outline, an amber zigzag filament, a silver screw base and short amber rays around it. Below it, Innovation in Teaching is set in bold white Space Grotesk, with Award · EdTech Champion in spaced cyan letters. The recipient’s name appears in large white Poppins over a cyan rule, followed by a citation in soft blue-grey, two signature lines (Principal and Digital Learning Lead) in cyan and white, and our logo at the bottom.

What Makes a Teacher an Innovator?

Innovation looks different in different schools. When choosing a recipient, look for someone whose new approach improved learning and spread beyond their own classroom. Typical achievements include:

  • Introducing a digital tool that made feedback faster or more personal.
  • Designing a blended or flipped learning unit that other teachers adopted.
  • Starting a coding, robotics, or maker club.
  • Leading training sessions for colleagues on new technology.
  • Using data from assessments to target support more effectively.
  • Finding low-tech innovations too: a new seating system, a peer-tutoring scheme, a better homework routine.

An Award Rubric You Can Share

If several staff are nominated, a clear rubric keeps the decision fair and explains to everyone what the school values.

CriterionGuiding question
Impact on learningDid students learn more, better, or more independently because of it?
OriginalityWas it new to our school or used freshly?
SharingDid the teacher help colleagues adopt the idea?
SustainabilityCan it continue next year without extra cost or effort?
InclusionDoes it help all learners, including those with barriers to access?

Writing a Strong Citation

The sample citation praises the recipient for pioneering new ideas and digital tools in the classroom. Make it specific. Name the tool or project and its result: for launching our school’s online reading platform, which increased independent reading by 40 percent, or for training every member of staff to use interactive quizzes during the first term. Numbers, where you have them, give the award weight and make the certificate a valuable piece of evidence for the teacher’s career.

Rewiring the Design for Your School

  1. Click the name and type the recipient’s name; the sans-serif typeface keeps the modern look.
  2. Rewrite the citation and edit the signature names and roles.
  3. Change EdTech Champion to another subtitle such as Digital Learning Pioneer, STEM Innovator, or Creative Technologist.
  4. The two circuit clusters are grouped objects. Select one to recolour its traces; switching cyan to green gives a classic circuit-board look.
  5. The light bulb is a group of simple shapes, so you can change the glass outline or the filament colour.

Printing a Dark Certificate

The full midnight background needs a good printer. A colour laser printer or a professional print service will give an even, rich colour on 250 gsm matte cardstock. Home inkjet printers can produce banding on large dark areas; if that is all you have, consider switching the background to white and the white text to dark navy before printing, which the editor makes easy. For digital presentation, the dark design looks excellent as a PNG on screen, shared in a staff newsletter or on the school’s social media.

Presenting the Award

An innovation award is a great opportunity to spread ideas. When presenting it, invite the winner to demonstrate their project in a short slot at a staff meeting, or record a two-minute video for colleagues who could not attend. Some schools create an innovation showcase evening where parents see student work produced with new approaches, and present the certificate there.

Innovation Beyond Technology

Although the design leans into technology, the award does not have to. Some of the most effective innovations are simple: a new way of starting lessons that settles a class, a peer-marking system, or an outdoor learning programme. Use the citation to make it clear what kind of innovation is being honoured. Rewarding thoughtful, low-tech ideas alongside digital ones shows staff that innovation is about thinking differently, not about having the newest device.

Building an Innovation Culture

A single award is a start; a culture of innovation needs more. School leaders can protect time for teachers to experiment, accept that some experiments will fail, and create easy ways for successful ideas to spread, such as a monthly teach-meet where staff share what they are trying. Recognising innovators publicly with this certificate signals that experimentation is valued, and encourages others to try their own ideas next year. Over time, the list of past winners becomes a map of who to ask when a colleague wants to try something new.

Innovation Award Questions

Can students receive this award?

Yes. It works well for student technology leaders, coding competition winners, or digital ambassadors. Adjust the title and citation.

Can I use a white background instead?

Yes. Select the background rectangle and change its colour, then update the text colours for contrast.

What size is it?

US Letter landscape, 11 x 8.5 inches; it also prints on A4 with Fit to page.
