Every spring, pools and aquatic centres face the same deadline: open the gates on Memorial Day with enough certified lifeguards on the stand. This Lifeguards Wanted Flyer is designed to be spotted from across a school hallway. The top half of the page is a pool seen from above: turquoise water with gentle ripple lines, two red-and-white lane ropes, and a classic red-and-white life ring. Across the water, LIFEGUARDS in white and WANTED in sunny yellow, with Summer 2027 · Ages 15+ · We train you. A tiled pool edge leads onto a sand-coloured deck with the open spots, hourly pay, perks and a red whistle, and a deep blue footer explains how to apply. It suits city and county pools, YMCAs, swim clubs, water parks, resorts, country clubs, summer camps and HOA pools.

A Pool You Can Almost Hear

Teenagers and college students scanning a noticeboard in spring are already dreaming of summer. The design meets them there: bright water, lane ropes and a life ring say pool job before a single word is read. The bold rounded Bungee lettering with a soft drop shadow feels fun and energetic, while the pool deck below stays clean and easy to read, because parents often read the flyer too.

Water, Deck and Footer: How the Flyer Is Arranged

  • The water: a turquoise area covering the top of the page, with faint wavy lines suggesting light on the water (grouped as one object).
  • Lane ropes: two full-width ropes of alternating red and white floats, each rope grouped.
  • Headline: SPLASH CITY AQUATICS in small white capitals, then LIFEGUARDS and WANTED in Bungee.
  • Life ring: a red-and-white ring illustration floating on the right, placed as an editable vector.
  • Pool edge: a row of alternating blue and white tiles.
  • Open spots: Lifeguards $17/hr, Swim Instructors $19/hr, Pool Managers $21/hr, and Snack Bar Crew $14/hr, with thin dividers.
  • Perks: free Red Cross certification, flexible shifts all summer, a free pool pass for your family, and an end-of-season bonus, headed by a red whistle icon.
  • Footer: the application deadline and link, a note that certification classes start in April, the number of pools, a phone number, and our small logo.

The flyer is made for US Letter paper, 8.5 x 11 inches, in a portrait layout.

From Applicant to Certified Lifeguard: The Steps

Many applicants and their parents do not know how lifeguard certification works. Explaining the path on your application page, or in a caption when you share the flyer, removes the biggest barrier. A typical path looks like this:

  1. Prerequisite swim test: usually a continuous swim of about 300 yards, treading water for two minutes, and a timed brick retrieval from the deep end. Check your certifying agency’s exact requirements.
  2. Certification course: an American Red Cross, YMCA, or Ellis & Associates lifeguarding course covering rescues, CPR/AED for professional rescuers, and first aid, often over two weekends.
  3. Hiring and in-service training: facility-specific training on your pool’s layout, emergency action plan, and rotation schedule.
  4. Ongoing drills: regular in-service training during the season to keep skills sharp.
  5. Recertification: most lifeguard certifications last two years.

Offering the course for free, as the sample flyer does, is one of the most effective ways to fill the stand.

Editing the Pool Flyer

  1. Facility name: double-click SPLASH CITY AQUATICS and type your pool’s name.
  2. Headline: LIFEGUARDS WANTED can become SWIM INSTRUCTORS WANTED or SUMMER JOBS; Bungee is wide, so keep lines short.
  3. Subline: set your season, minimum age, and training promise.
  4. Roles and pay: each role and rate is a separate text box with a divider; delete or duplicate rows as needed.
  5. Perks: edit the four lines; keep them to one line each.
  6. Colours: recolour the water or lane ropes to match your facility’s colours; the life ring and whistle are editable vectors.
  7. Footer: change the deadline, link and phone number. Add a QR code with the editor’s QR tool if you like.

Recruiting Teens, and Reassuring Parents

Most lifeguards are teenagers, and their parents are part of the decision. Be clear about the minimum age (commonly 15 or 16), shift lengths, rotation and break policies, and the supervision provided by head guards and pool managers. If you offer shifts that fit around summer school, sports practices, and family holidays, say so. Teens respond to the social side of the job, working with friends and hanging out at the pool on days off, while parents respond to safety, training, and a respected first job that looks good on college applications. The flyer’s We train you and Free Red Cross certification lines speak to both.

Filling the Stand Before Opening Day

Lifeguard shortages have closed pools in many towns in recent summers, often because hiring started too late. Work backwards from your opening date: certification courses fill up quickly and take two weekends, so candidates need to apply by early spring to be trained in time. Post the flyer in February or March, schedule the first certification class in April, and keep a second class in May for late applicants. Returning guards are your most valuable recruits, so contact last year’s team early and offer a returning-guard bonus. Encourage current guards to bring friends; a small referral bonus paid after a friend completes the season works well.

Where Future Lifeguards Will See It

  • High school swim teams, water polo clubs and athletic departments.
  • College campus job boards before students head home for summer.
  • Your own pool, rec centre and swim lesson waiting areas.
  • Libraries, community centres and youth sports registration events.
  • Parent groups online and your facility’s social media, via the PNG download.

Printing Turquoise Water

Print from the PDF download on bright white paper. The turquoise water covers the top half of the page, so a colour laser printer or print shop gives the most even colour. For pool fences and outdoor boards, laminate the flyer; it will face sun and splashes.

Aquatics Director Questions

Can I list swim lesson times too?

Add a second page with Add Page for swim lesson registration, or use the footer for a short note about lessons.

Is the life ring a photo?

No, it is an editable vector illustration. You can resize or recolour it from its colour swatches.

Can I change the pool to a beach?

Recolour the water to a deeper blue, delete the lane ropes, and change the tiles to a sand colour, and it works for beach and lake guards.

Open the template, set your season and pay, promise free certification, and get it up at every high school before spring break.
