Halloween dinner parties have become a beloved tradition for grown-ups: candlelit tables, black dinnerware, cocktails with dry ice, and guests in costume. A themed place card sets the tone the moment guests sit down. This one is spooky but stylish. A spiderweb stretches across the top right corner, a little spider dangles from the fold on its silk thread, a grinning jack-o’-lantern glows in the bottom corner, and each guest’s name is set in a gothic blackletter font. The back of the card is deep purple with a pattern of orange skulls.
Web, Spider and Pumpkin on Black
The card is 3.5 x 4 inches flat and folds to 3.5 x 2 inches. The front is near-black. In the top right corner, a spiderweb fans out from the edge, its grey spokes connected by curved threads. On the left, a thin grey line drops from the fold to a small black spider with spindly legs and two orange eyes. In the bottom right, a full-colour jack-o’-lantern grins. The text sits on the left: Trick or Treat Yourself in small orange capitals, the name Victor Graves in Pirata One, a gothic blackletter font, in bone-white, and table 13 – if you dare in lime-green italic. The back is a dark purple with a pattern of orange skulls and the logo in orange.
The Skull Pattern Is an Editor Texture
The skulls on the back come from the editor’s built-in Skulls background texture, set in orange at low opacity over purple. Change it from Backgrounds, Pattern: make the skulls bone-white for a creepier look, lime green for a toxic theme, larger or smaller, or swap the pattern for Bubbles (a witch’s cauldron) or Hexagons (a spider’s lair). The black front panel covers the pattern, so it appears only on the back.
Spooky Names and Table Lines
Halloween is a chance to play with names. Some hosts use guests’ real names in the gothic font; others give each guest a spooky alter ego for the night. Ideas for the line under the name:
- table 13 – if you dare
- the haunted table
- seated beside the ghosts
- no escape until dessert
- your fate is sealed
For a murder-mystery dinner, replace the line with each guest’s character name and role.
Writing Guest or Costume Names in Gothic Type
Click the bone-white name and type the guest’s name, or their costume character. Pirata One is dramatic but readable at this size; names up to about fourteen characters fit comfortably. Edit the lime line, then download the card and move to the next guest. The web, spider, and pumpkin are separate pieces, so you can move them if a name runs long.
Halloween Party Themes
| Theme | Colour changes | Line idea |
|---|---|---|
| Classic spooky (as designed) | Black, orange, purple | Table 13 – if you dare |
| Vampire dinner | Black and blood red | Bring your own garlic |
| Witches’ brew | Black and lime green | Stirring the cauldron |
| Haunted mansion | Grey and silver | The ghost of dinner past |
| Pumpkin harvest | Cream and orange | patch table |
The Spider and Web
The spiderweb is a group of thin lines; recolour it white for a frosty web or orange for a playful one. The spider is a small group of shapes with its thread; move it or change the length of the thread so it dangles lower. The jack-o’-lantern is a full-colour editable illustration that you can resize or replace with a bat, a cat, or a ghost from the editor’s library.
Printing Dark Halloween Cards
Black and dark purple use a lot of ink. A laser printer gives the deepest black. At home, choose a matte cardstock setting at best quality and print a test card. The thin web lines need a decent quality setting to stay visible. Let the cards dry thoroughly before folding.
Folding the Spooky Card
Trim to 3.5 x 4 inches, score along the middle and fold with the black front outward. The spider’s thread starts at the fold, so on the standing card it appears to drop from the top edge.
A Haunting Table Setting
Black tablecloths, candelabras with dripping candles, black or copper plates, mini pumpkins, and faux cobwebs stretched across the centrepiece create the mood. Plastic spiders placed near each card are a cheap, funny touch. Serve drinks in goblets, and dim the lights so the candles do the work.
Halloween Dinner Party Games
Write a spooky riddle on the inside of each card for guests to solve over dinner, or assign each guest a secret murderer or victim role for a quick murder-mystery game. Prizes for the best costume can be announced at the table, with the winner’s card swapped for a gold-crowned version.
Horror Nights, Masquerades and October Birthdays
Use the design for Day of the Dead dinners with a colour change, horror movie nights, autumn masquerades, haunted house fundraisers and October birthdays. Change the headline and line.
Safety With Candles and Costumes
Halloween tables often combine open flames, paper decorations, and flowing costumes. Use LED candles near place cards and cobwebs, keep real candles in glass holders well away from paper, and leave enough space between chairs for capes and wings. Dry ice in drinks needs care: use food-grade dry ice only in the bowl, never in individual glasses. A safe table is a fun table.
Halloween Card Questions
Is it suitable for kids?
It is mildly spooky. For young children, change the gothic font to a rounder one and use a smiling pumpkin.
Why can’t I select the skulls?
The skulls are a locked background; open Backgrounds and then the Pattern tab to change them.
What size is the folded card?
3.5 inches wide and 2 inches tall.
Can I use a different gothic font?
Yes. Rye, Pirata One, and other display fonts in the font list all suit a spooky card; keep the size large enough to read by candlelight.
Can the web go in the left corner instead?
Move the web group to the left corner and the spider to the right side for a mirrored layout.
