On New Year’s Eve, every eye in the room ends up on a clock. This place card puts that clock at every seat. A gold clock face with its hands just shy of twelve fills the left side of a black card, a subtle gold geometric texture shimmers across the background, and the guest’s name is written in elegant white script beside the words New Year’s Eve. It is perfect for a countdown dinner party, a restaurant New Year’s celebration, or a gala that ends with champagne at midnight.
A Clock Waiting for Midnight
This is a flat card measuring 3.5 x 2 inches in landscape, about the size of a business card. The background is black, overlaid with a faint gold pattern of fine diagonal lines and diamonds. On the left, a round clock face in dark charcoal has a gold rim, gold hour marks (thicker at twelve, three, six, and nine), a pale gold minute hand pointing straight up, and an hour hand just before twelve, with a gold centre pin. On the right, New Year’s Eve is spaced in gold capitals, the name Rachel Kim is set in white Great Vibes script, a short gold rule follows, and Cheers to 2027 · Table 6 is written in pale gold italic. A small gold logo sits below.
The Gold Texture Is Editable
The shimmering pattern comes from the editor’s background Pattern feature, using the Glamorous pattern in gold at low opacity. Open Backgrounds and choose Pattern to change it: brighten it by raising the opacity, change its colour to silver for a winter-white party, scale it up or down, or swap in another pattern such as Formal Invitation or Diagonal Lines. You can also remove the pattern for a plain black card.
Updating the Year and Details
Click the italic line to change the year and table, or replace it with a toast such as Here’s to new beginnings or Out with the old, in with the new. If your party has no table plan, put the venue or the host’s name there instead. The name above it is the only element you need to change for each guest.
Making a Set for Every Guest
- Finalise the year and table line wording first.
- Click the white name and type the first guest’s name.
- Download the card.
- Type the next name over it and download again.
Great Vibes looks best with first and last name; for very long names, reduce the size slightly.

For an international party, use a different toast on each card for a fun conversation starter.
The Clock Illustration
The clock is a group of simple shapes: the face, the rim, the twelve hour marks, two hands and a centre pin. Ungroup it to change colours or to move the hands, for example, to show the exact time your party starts. Keep the gold rim slightly thicker than the marks so the clock reads clearly at business-card size.
Flat Cards on a Party Table
Because this card is flat, it works especially well on crowded party tables and at cocktail-style events with high tables. Lay it on a folded napkin, slip it under the foot of a champagne coupe, or stand it in a small card holder. For a buffet party without assigned seats, you can use the card as an escort card or a name badge instead.
Printing Black and Gold
Black backgrounds use a lot of ink. A laser printer or a print shop gives the richest black and the crispest gold lines. At home, use a heavy matte cardstock or business-card stock with a cardstock setting at best quality, and let cards dry before stacking. For extra sparkle, a print shop can add gold foil to the clock rim.
A Countdown Table
Gold and black balloons, sparklers (unlit until midnight), party hats, noisemakers, and champagne coupes make a festive table. Place a small envelope at each setting containing a slip of paper for a New Year’s resolution or a wish for the next year, to be read aloud after the countdown.
Resolution Game
Ask each guest to write a resolution anonymously on the back of their place card. Collect them in a hat after dinner and read them aloud while everyone guesses who wrote each one. It is a light-hearted way to fill the last half hour before midnight.
Other Uses for the Clock Card
The design suits retirement parties (Time to relax), milestone birthdays, a Cinderella-themed party, a watchmaker’s launch event, or a time-capsule dinner. Change the label and the line under the name.
Hosting a Seated New Year’s Eve Dinner
A seated dinner turns New Year’s Eve into an event rather than a long wait for midnight. Plan dinner to begin around eight, with courses spaced out so dessert arrives about an hour before the countdown. Place cards help mix friend groups so the conversation flows across the table. Keep champagne chilled, glasses ready, and a screen or radio tuned to the countdown, and let the clock on every card remind guests what the night is building toward.
