Giving the Winner a Proper Certificate
Competition organisers know the moment: the results are read out, the winner steps forward, and someone hands over a sheet of paper. If that paper looks cheap, the moment feels smaller. A first place certificate with a bold title and a gold seal is part of what makes the day memorable.
Blue Frame, Gold Filigree and a Gothic Title
The certificate is Letter size landscape, 11 x 8.5 inches. A strong blue border with a fine woven texture surrounds a white panel with a thin gold frame and gold filigree corners. At the top, the words First Place Award appear in blue, and below them CERTIFICATE is set in a dramatic blackletter typeface, in dark blue, like the masthead of an old newspaper. A thin line of gold dots and a small gold star divides the title from the text.
This certificate is proudly presented to leads to the name, MARTHA WILLIAMS, in gold capitals. A paragraph follows. The bottom centre carries a round gold and blue seal with the word WINNER and a number 1 inside a laurel wreath, ringed with small stars. Lines for the date and the signature flank it.
Why Blackletter Changes the Mood
The Gothic style of the heading looks historic and serious. It suits competitions with tradition, such as spelling bees, debate tournaments, chess and martial arts. For a light or playful event, choose a design with a friendlier typeface. The title is an image in this template, so it cannot be edited as text. If you want a different title, such as Winner, you can edit the line above it, First Place Award.
Customising the Award Line
| Event | Replace First Place Award with |
|---|---|
| Debate | First Place in Debate |
| Science fair | First Place Science Fair Award |
| Photography contest | First Prize in Photography |
| Cooking contest | Grand Champion Chef |
Runner Up Certificates
If you give second and third place awards, use the same layout and edit the line to Second Place Award and Third Place Award. The seal still says number 1, so replace it with a neutral picture for lower places, or delete it. Keeping the same design across places makes the event look organised.
Printing and Presentation
The blue frame is heavy, so print a test. A matte or parchment stock keeps the gold calm. For prizes, add a simple folder or a frame. Sign in dark ink, and have the date written in full.
Planning a Whole Prize Table
If you run a competition with several categories, make the certificates as a set. Keep the layout, change the award line, and print them in the same batch so that the colours match. Lay the finished certificates on a table in order of category before the ceremony, and check each name against the programme. A tidy table of certificates adds to the sense of occasion for guests.
For young competitors, laminate the certificate or place it in a plastic sleeve so that it survives the journey home.
A sporting event may prefer the sports achievement certificate, while a modern look is available in the performance award certificate. Every design is gathered in appreciation and award certificates.
