Like a good bottle of wine, some things simply get better with time. A 40th Birthday is the perfect moment to celebrate that idea with a little wit and a lot of style. This invitation is designed as a vintage wine label, complete with a seal, a vintage year, and an elegant reserve feel, so your guests know they are invited to toast something truly well-aged.

A Label from the Cellar

The card is landscape, 7 x 5 inches. A deep burgundy background, the colour of a full-bodied red, surrounds a large cream label with notched corners, just like the paper label on a fine bottle. Two gold borders run inside it, a thicker line and a finer one, following the notched shape.

At the top centre, a round burgundy seal carries a cream 40 in Playfair Display and EST. 1986 in small gold capitals, with thin gold lines and diamonds on either side. VINTAGE, RESERVE, 1986 follows in gold spaced capitals. Then comes the title, Aged to Perfection, in large dark Playfair Display italic, and MICHAEL TURNER’S 40TH BIRTHDAY in burgundy capitals. A gold rule leads to three neat columns separated by thin gold lines: WHEN (Saturday, Oct 3, 7 PM), WHERE (Cellar Door Bistro, 9 Vine Street) and RSVP (Karen, with a phone number). The OTO logo sits in burgundy at the bottom of the label.

Setting the Vintage Year

The fun of this design is the vintage year. It should be the birth year of the guest of honour. The sample uses 1986 for a 40th birthday in 2026. Here is a quick reference if you are adapting the card for other milestones in 2026:

BirthdayVintage yearLabel line
30th1996Vintage, Reserve, 1996
40th1986Vintage, Reserve, 1986
50th1976Grand Reserve, 1976
60th1966Rare Vintage, 1966
70th1956Collector’s Edition, 1956
80th1946Fine and Rare, 1946

Change both the year in the seal (EST.) and in the VINTAGE line, and update the big number in the seal to match the age.

Alternative Label Wording

Aged to Perfection is the classic, but the wine label opens the door to plenty of witty variations:

  • Better with Age
  • Forty and Full-Bodied
  • A Fine Vintage
  • Cheers to 40 Years
  • Uncorked at Forty
  • Still Got a Great Finish

Double-click the title to type your choice; the italic serif keeps the elegant tone whatever you write.

Planning a Wine-Themed 40th

The invitation naturally suggests a wine-themed celebration. A private room at a wine bar or bistro, as in the sample, is an easy option. At home, set up a tasting table with three or four wines, each with a little card describing it, and a cheese and charcuterie board. Ask guests to bring a bottle from the guest of honour’s birth year or the year they met, if they can find one. Older vintages are rare and pricey, so a bottle with a funny label or a favourite grape works just as well. Wine-cork place cards, grapevine table runners and burgundy napkins tie everything back to the card.

Customising the Label

All text on the card is editable. Change the name, the date, the venue, and the RSVP details in the three columns, and update the vintage year and age in the seal. The seal itself is a small group: the burgundy circle, the gold ring, and the text move together, and you can ungroup it to change the colours.

The burgundy background and the cream label are separate shapes, so you can switch to a white-wine palette (soft gold label on sage) or a champagne theme (ivory on black). The gold borders and rules can become silver for a cooler look. Fonts are Playfair Display for the seal and title and Montserrat for the capitals and details, both in the editor.

A Matching Bottle Label Favour

Because the card is designed like a wine label, it can double as a real label. Print the design at the size of a standard wine label (roughly 4 x 3 inches) on sticker paper, and stick it on small bottles of wine or sparkling juice as party favours. Guests take home a personalised Michael Turner 1986 Reserve. You can also print one large version for a framed sign at the entrance.

A Toast Fit for a Fine Vintage

A wine-themed 40th practically begs for a toast. Keep it short and play with the label idea: Forty years ago, a rare vintage was produced. Bold, complex, a little cheeky on the finish, and only getting better with age. Please raise your glasses to Michael, aged to perfection. Ask a close friend or partner to give it, and have the glasses filled before they start. If several people want to speak, give each one a tasting note theme, such as early years, wild years, and best years yet, so the speeches build on each other instead of repeating the same stories.

Paper That Feels Like a Label

Download the PDF and print on a textured, uncoated card in cream or ivory for an authentic wine-label feel. Trim to 7 x 5 inches. The burgundy prints richly on most stocks, and gold details look elegant even without foil. A kraft or burgundy envelope completes the cellar look. For digital sharing, download a PNG or JPG.

Gift Ideas for a Wine Lover’s 40th

If guests ask for gift ideas, the theme makes it easy. A bottle from the birth year, a wine-tasting experience, a personalised corkscrew, a wine-of-the-month subscription, or a set of good glasses all fit perfectly. Many families also collect forty notes or memories from friends and present them in a wooden wine box.

Aged to Perfection Questions

Can I use this card for someone who does not drink?

Yes. The aged to perfection idea works for cheese, whisky labels, or simply as a stylish design. Change the sub-line to Vintage 1986.

Is a 40th usually a surprise party?

Often. Add Shh, it’s a surprise! in the RSVP column if so.

Does it work for a joint birthday?

Yes. Put both names in the burgundy capitals line and both years in the seal.

Can the landscape card be turned portrait?

The label is designed for landscape. For a portrait card, you would need to rearrange the columns.

Uncork the details: add the name, the vintage year, and the venue, and send the label out. Forty never tasted so good.
