Taco night is the great equaliser. Kids love it, grown-ups love it, vegetarians love it, and nobody minds when the shell breaks. Put out the fillings, let everyone build their own, and the party practically hosts itself. This invitation is as loud and cheerful as the evening it announces.
Stripes, a Plate and a Big Title
This is a landscape card, 7 x 5 inches. The left third is a serape panel: bold horizontal stripes of hot pink, orange, sunshine yellow, teal, purple, and green, separated by thin white and dark lines, just like a woven Mexican blanket. A round white plate sits in the middle of the stripes, holding two golden tacos stuffed with meat, lettuce, and tomato.
The right side has a warm cream background. Let’s taco ’bout it runs across the top in small pink capitals. Then comes TACO in heavy dark Bungee letters and Night in orange Lobster script. A short line mentions the taco bar, chips, guac, and agua fresca, followed by a white rounded card with the date, the venue, and the RSVP. Bring your favourite salsa in teal script, and the OTO logo finishes the layout. A thin strip of the same serape stripes runs down the right edge, echoing the panel on the left.
Shopping List for a Taco Bar (Per 10 Guests)
The question every host asks: how much do I buy? Plan on about three tacos per adult and two per child.
| Item | Amount for 10 adults | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Tortillas or shells | 36 to 40 | Mix soft corn, soft flour, and crunchy shells |
| Main protein | 1.5 to 2 kg | Seasoned beef, chicken tinga or carnitas |
| Vegetarian filling | 1 kg | Black beans, roasted sweet potato or grilled peppers |
| Shredded lettuce and cabbage | 2 heads | Shred close to serving time |
| Cheese | 500 g | Cheddar, Monterey Jack or crumbled cotija |
| Salsa and hot sauce | 3 to 4 jars or bowls | One mild, one medium, one hot |
| Guacamole | 6 to 8 avocados | Add lime juice so it stays green |
| Tortilla chips | 2 large bags | For dipping while the tacos are built |
| Limes and coriander | 6 limes, 2 bunches | The finishing touch |
Laying Out the Bar So Nobody Queues
Set the bar out in the order people build: plates first, then tortillas (kept warm in a tea towel or a slow cooker), then proteins, then beans and rice, then cold toppings, then salsas and sauces, and finally napkins and limes at the end. If you have more than fifteen guests, make the bar two-sided so two lines can move at once. Put the drinks on a separate table so the line does not stall at the agua fresca jug.
Rewriting the Taco Card
Double-click any line to change it. The sample card says Tuesday, August 25, 6:30 PM and Casa Ramirez, with Lucia as the RSVP contact. Change Let’s taco ’bout it to another pun if you like: Taco ’bout a party, Lettuce celebrate, or Nacho average birthday. The white details card can carry a birthday name instead of Taco Night: Diego turns 30!
The serape panel and the thin strip on the right are each one grouped object, so you can recolour the stripes to your favourite palette in a few clicks. The tacos are editable vector art; select the plate artwork to recolour the filling or ungroup it to adjust a single part. Fonts are Bungee, Lobster and Montserrat, all available in the editor.
Spice Levels, Allergies and Picky Eaters
A taco bar is one of the friendliest meals for mixed diets, as long as the bar is labelled. Use little folded cards in front of each bowl to name the filling and mark it mild, medium or hot, and note anything that contains nuts, dairy or gluten. Keep the hottest salsa at the end of the line so nobody adds it by accident, and set out a plain, unseasoned protein for small children. For vegan guests, a bowl of seasoned black beans or spiced roasted cauliflower is just as satisfying as meat, and it keeps the bar inclusive without a separate menu. If you have a guest with a serious allergy, give their bowls their own serving spoons and set them a little apart from the rest. Asking about allergies in the RSVP line on the card- for example, RSVP to Lucia and let her know about allergies– saves a lot of last-minute shopping.
Ideas for a Fuller Fiesta
- Serve agua fresca in three flavours: watermelon, hibiscus (jamaica), and horchata.
- Hang paper flowers in the same colours as the serape stripes.
- Play a mariachi or Latin pop playlist at a gentle volume.
- Offer churros or tres leches cake for dessert.
- Make a salsa competition: guests bring their best, everyone votes.
Taco Tuesday, Birthday or Team Lunch?
The card is generic enough to work for many occasions. A weekly Taco Tuesday with neighbours, a backyard birthday, a team lunch at the office, a graduation party, or a casual engagement celebration all work. Only the white details card needs to change.
Print and Post
Download the invitation as a PDF and print it on bright white card for the strongest stripes. A 7 x 5 inch card fits an A7 envelope; a hot-pink or orange envelope looks fantastic in the post. For a group chat or email, download a PNG or JPG.
Taco Night FAQs
Can I make everything ahead?
Most of it. Cook the fillings the day before and reheat them. Chop vegetables a few hours ahead. Only the guacamole and warm tortillas need last-minute attention.
What about gluten-free guests?
Corn tortillas are naturally gluten-free, but check the packet. Label the bar so guests can choose easily.
Is “Bring your favourite salsa” rude?
Not at all at a casual party. It is a friendly way to share the cost and add variety. Remove the line if you would rather provide everything.
Pick your date, stock the bar, and send the stripes out. The only thing left to argue about is hard shell versus soft.
