Lights, Curtains, Action
A movie night is one of the easiest gifts to give and one of the hardest to wrap. This certificate solves the problem. It promises a holiday screening, whether that is a family film at home, a private cinema booking or a night at the local theatre, and it looks like the grand opening of one.
The Scene on the Card
The certificate is 3.375 x 2.125 inches in landscape, the size of a credit card. The background is near black. At the top left and right, rich red theatre curtains are pulled back, and a scatter of yellow stars sparkles between them. In the centre is a marquee sign edged with round light bulbs, in yellow, where the word Holiday is written in a red script above MOVIE NIGHT in heavy black capitals. A red ribbon across the bottom of the sign says GIFT CERTIFICATE.
At the lower right, a retro film camera on a tripod, in navy and yellow with two big reels, adds to the cinema mood. The writing area on the left is in white: a bold line reading DATE | TIME | LOCATION, then Gifted To, From and Date, each with a line, and a small yellow Happy Holidays at the bottom corner. The condensed display type in the title is Bebas Neue.
Two Ways to Fill It In
As an event ticket
Replace DATE | TIME | LOCATION with the real details, for example “Dec 20 | 7 PM | Living Room Cinema.” Then write the recipient and the sender in the lines below.
As an open invitation
Leave the date open and change the line to something like “Pick Any Film, Any Night.” The Date line can hold the day the gift was given.
Event Ideas to Pair With It
- Popcorn and a favourite film for the whole family.
- A cinema or streaming gift card tucked behind the certificate.
- A backyard screening with blankets and cocoa.
- A class party where students vote on the film.
Editing and Printing
All the writing is text and can be changed. The curtains, the stars, the marquee frame and the projector are artwork. The dark background is heavy on ink, so print a trial first, and use matte card stock to avoid shine from the lights. Light pens such as gold or white gel pens show well on the black area.
Planning the Movie Night Itself
The certificate is only the invitation, so it helps to plan the evening. Choose the film and the room, and decide on snacks: popcorn, hot chocolate, sweets in paper cones. If the guest of honour picks the film, write that on the Date line, such as “Your choice, any Friday in December.” Small details like paper tickets for each seat make the night feel like a real cinema.
For a bigger event, print one certificate for every guest, with the same date and place on all of them, and hand them out as invitations.
The black background hides fingerprints well, which is a bonus when the card is passed from hand to hand.
For another gift that is really an experience, see the experience gift certificate or the holiday photography session certificate. The rest of the set is in gift certificates and vouchers.
