A food truck menu board has seconds to do its job. People spot the truck from across a car park, walk over, and read the board while they wait in line, often from ten feet away or more. Small type and cluttered layouts lose customers. This Food Truck Menu Board Template is built for distance: big condensed lettering, huge prices, and only ten items. It also has a playful twist, because the board is drawn as the truck itself, from the light-up sign on the roof to the wheels on the road.

The Truck, Drawn as a Menu

This is a large-format poster, 24 x 36 inches in portrait, the standard size for A-frame sidewalk signs, poster frames, and printed truck-side panels. The background is a dark night-sky charcoal. At the top, a red marquee sign sits on two steel posts. Its edge is lined with cream bulbs like an old cinema sign, and it reads BIG WHEEL in chunky Bungee letters, with BURGERS · FRIES · SHAKES in yellow underneath.

Below the sign is the truck body, a big sunflower-yellow panel with rounded corners. Across its top hangs a red-and-white striped awning with a scalloped edge, shading the serving window. The window is a wide photo frame with a thick black border and a steel counter ledge underneath, ready for a close-up of your best burger. Then the menu is painted onto the yellow side of the truck:

  • BURGERS and SIDES & SHAKES in red Bungee headings with thick black underlines;
  • five items per column, each name in tall Anton type with a high red price on the right and a short description beneath;
  • a black MAKE IT A COMBO +$5 banner across the width;
  • a FIND THE TRUCK panel with a scannable QR code, your social handle and phone number.

Two chunky wheels with silver hubs sit at the base of the truck, overlapping its lower edge, above a strip of dark road with yellow lane markings. The road carries Cash · Card · Tap to pay on the left and our logo in yellow on the right. Between the wheels, Serving lunch & late nights is written on the truck’s side.

How Big Should Menu Letters Be?

A useful rule of thumb from the sign industry is that each inch of letter height gives good readability up to about ten feet away. Use it to check your edits:

Element on this boardApprox. letter heightComfortable reading distance
BIG WHEEL (truck name)about 1.5 in capitalsabout 15 ft
Combo bannerabout 0.8 inabout 8 ft
Pricesabout 0.55 inabout 5–6 ft
Item namesabout 0.5 inabout 5 ft
Descriptionsabout 0.25 inclose up, in the queue

Legibility also depends on contrast and lighting, and bold, condensed faces like the ones used here read further than the rule suggests. The hierarchy is what matters: from across the car park people can read the truck name, from the queue they can read items and prices, and by the time they reach the window they can read the details. If you add more items, resist the urge to shrink the names. Drop descriptions first.

Swapping in Your Own Truck

  1. The name sign: double-click BIG WHEEL and type your truck’s name. Names of up to ten letters fit at this size; for longer ones, reduce the font a little. Change the tagline under it to what you sell.
  2. The window photo: click the serving window and choose Replace Image. Your photo fills the window and keeps its size and black frame. Choose a bright, close-up food photo; at this size, detail matters.
  3. Menu items: each item has a name, a price, and a description. Retype them for tacos, BBQ, coffee, crêpes, or whatever you serve, and rename the headings to match.
  4. The combo banner: use it for your best upsell, for example, ADD A DRINK $1 or DAILY SPECIAL $10.
  5. The QR code: select it and enter your own link in the QR options, such as your location tracker, Instagram, or online ordering page. Test it with a phone before printing.
  6. Colours: the truck body, sign, and awning each change colour in one click. The bulbs and wheels are grouped, so they move and recolour as a unit.

Where Food Truck Boards Go

  • A-frame sidewalk sign: most A-frame boards take 24 x 36 inch inserts. Print on rigid board, or on poster paper behind a clear cover.
  • On the truck: mount it beside the serving window, or have a sign shop print it on weatherproof vinyl or aluminium composite panel.
  • Event booths and markets: lean it against your table at festivals, farmers’ markets and fairs.
  • Online: download a JPG to post your menu on social media, festival listings and delivery apps.

Printing at Poster Size

Download the design as a PDF for the sharpest result and take it to a print shop or an online poster printer. For outdoor use, ask for:

  • Coroplast (corrugated plastic) or foam board for A-frames, light and cheap;
  • Aluminium composite panel for a board that lives on the truck for years;
  • Matte laminate to cut glare under the sun and protect the colours from fading.

The text and shapes are vectors, so they print crisply at 24 x 36 inches. Only the photo depends on resolution, so use a high-resolution image (at least 3000 pixels wide) in the serving window.

Food Truck Owners Ask

Can I use this for a taco, coffee, or ice cream truck?

Yes. The truck shape suits any menu. Change the headings and items, recolour the body (teal for tacos, brown for coffee, pink for ice cream), and swap the window photo.

Can I print it smaller for a window menu?

The 24 x 36 layout scales down proportionally to 12 x 18 or 18 x 24 inches, which is useful for a menu taped inside the serving window. Very small descriptions may need a larger font at those sizes.

How do I show items that sell out?

Print the board once, then use a removable SOLD OUT sticker or a small magnetic strip. Or keep the design saved and download a new version whenever the menu changes.

Should prices include the dollar sign?

Street-food boards often drop it, as this template does, because big clean numbers read faster from a distance. Add $ if your customers expect it.

Roll Out Your Menu

Put your truck’s name on the marquee, your best dish in the window, and your prices in big bold numbers. Print it at poster size, set it beside the queue, and let customers see what’s cooking before they reach the window.
