Building gingerbread houses is messy, sticky, and wonderful. Walls collapse, roofs slide, icing goes everywhere, and everyone ends up eating more sweets than they stick on. A decorating party turns this into a shared event for families, friends, classrooms, and community groups. This 5 x 7 inch invitation looks good enough to eat: a warm gingerbread brown background with white icing dripping from the top edge, a gingerbread house with an iced roofline, gumdrop trim and a candy red door, and bold Fredoka lettering.

The Design Up Close

A thick band of white icing runs across the top of the card, with drips of different lengths running down, each ending in a round bead, just like royal icing on a real gingerbread roof. The background is a toasty gingerbread brown. The house in the middle has warm brown walls, a darker roof, a cheerful window above the door, two yellow windows with white icing crosses, a red arched door, and a chimney. A chain of red, teal, and yellow gumdrops runs along both slopes of the roof, and a row of white icing dots decorates the eaves.

Below the house, Gingerbread is set in creamy white Fredoka with a darker brown drop shadow, and HOUSE DECORATING PARTY sits in spaced brown capitals. A two-line italic message says We supply the houses and the icing. You bring the creativity. A red pill-shaped banner holds the date and time, and the host, address, and RSVP are underneath. Little red sweets are scattered in the bottom corners.

Supplies for a Gingerbread Decorating Party

The invitation promises that the host supplies the houses and icing, so plan accordingly. For each guest or team you will need:

  • A gingerbread house kit or pre-baked panels assembled in advance. Assembling houses the day before saves a lot of frustration, because the icing needs time to set.
  • A sturdy base, such as a cake board or a piece of card covered in foil.
  • Royal icing in piping bags, at least one bag per person. Royal icing sets hard and holds sweets in place.
  • A shared table of decorations: gumdrops, candy canes, chocolate buttons, sprinkles, mini marshmallows, pretzels for fences, cereal squares for roof tiles, and shredded coconut for snow.
  • Paper plates to hold each person’s sweets and wet wipes for sticky hands.

Tips for Houses That Stay Standing

Gingerbread architecture has a few rules. Let the walls set for at least an hour before adding the roof. Use thick royal icing as glue, not buttercream, which never sets. Support walls with a mug or a tin while they dry. Decorate the roof panels flat before attaching them if young children are involved, which makes it much easier. Finally, keep the room cool; warm kitchens soften icing. If a house does collapse, call it a ruin and decorate it anyway; collapsed houses often get the biggest laughs.

Party Timeline

For a two- to three-hour party, guests arrive and choose a house, then spend about an hour decorating while festive music plays. Halfway through, serve a simple snack that is not sweet, such as sandwiches or soup, because the decorating table already offers plenty of sugar. Finish with a gallery walk where everyone admires each other’s houses, take photos, and perhaps award small prizes for most creative, most colourful, and best roof. Send each house home in a box or on its board wrapped in cling film.

Editing the Gingerbread Party Details

Click the red banner text to change the date and time; the sample is Sunday, December 13, 1 PM. The host line and address are below it, followed by the RSVP. If guests should bring their own decorations, change the italic line to Bring a bag of your favourite sweets to share. The house is an editable vector, so you can recolour the gumdrops, the door and the window lights from its swatches. The icing drips are grouped; change their colour to pink for a sugar plum theme or keep them white.

Party Variations

  • Classroom decorating day: change the address to the classroom, ask parents to send in sweets, and use graham cracker houses on milk cartons for an easy base.
  • Gingerbread competition: add a line announcing categories and a judging panel.
  • Adults’ gingerbread night: pair decorating with mulled wine and give a prize for the most ambitious architecture.
  • Gingerbread village: everyone decorates a house, and you arrange them together on one big board as a village.

Allergy Considerations

Gingerbread contains gluten, and many sweets contain nuts, dairy, or gelatin. Ask about allergies when people reply, and label sweets on the decorating table. Gluten-free gingerbread and allergy-friendly sweets are available if you plan.

Printing the Gingerbread Invitation

Download a PDF and print on 5 x 7 card stock with full bleed, because the brown background and icing reach the edges. A matte finish makes the brown look like real gingerbread. For a fun extra, attach a mini candy cane to each printed invitation before you hand it out.

Sending the Gingerbread Invite to Families

Download a JPG and send it in family or school groups. Ask people to reply with how many houses they need, so you can prepare the right number of kits.

Gingerbread Party Questions

Can I change the house colours?

Yes. Select the house and change any of its colour swatches.

Can I add a photo of last year’s houses?

Add a rectangle from the Elements panel below the title and use Replace Image.

Can I use it for a cookie decorating party?

Yes. Change the title to Cookie Decorating Party and adjust the italic line.

Photographing the Finished Houses

Gingerbread houses are only at their best for a few hours, so take photos before anyone starts nibbling the roof. Set up a simple photo corner with a white or wooden board, a few fairy lights behind, and a sprig of greenery. Photograph each house from slightly above and from the front, and take one of the builder holding their creation. Share the photos with guests after the party; families love having a record of what the children made each year.

Build Something Sweet Together

Order your kits, mix your icing, and send the invitation. A table covered in sweets and a room full of builders is one of the happiest scenes of December.
