A gratitude tree is one of the simplest and most loved Thanksgiving activities. Each person writes something they are thankful for on a leaf, and slowly the bare branches fill with colour. This printable version puts the whole tree on one page, with sixteen blank leaves already in place, so it works for a family table, a classroom wall, or an office break room without any cutting or gluing.

How to Use the Gratitude Tree, Step by Step

Step 1: Print the tree

Download the PDF and print it on US Letter paper or card. For a family, one copy is enough; for a classroom, print one per child or enlarge one copy to poster size.

Step 2: Put it where everyone passes

Tape it to the fridge, the front door, a classroom wall, or a notice board. Leave a pen or a few markers next to it on a string.

Step 3: Write one thing per leaf

Each person writes something they are thankful for on a leaf. Short words or phrases work best: Grandma,my dog,our new home, pancake Saturdays.

Step 4: Fill it over the month

Many families start on the first of November and add a leaf every day or two, so the tree is full by Thanksgiving. Others fill it all at once on the day, with each guest adding a leaf before dinner.

Step 5: Read it together

On Thanksgiving, read the leaves aloud before or after the meal. Children love hearing their own words read to the family.

Step 6: keep it

Date the back and save it. A stack of gratitude trees from different years is a lovely record of what mattered to your family.

What the Printable Looks Like

The page is US Letter, 8.5 x 11 inches, portrait, on a warm cream background. Our Gratitude Tree is written across the top in Amatic SC, a tall, hand-drawn style font, with a small rust instruction underneath: Write one thing you are thankful for on each leaf.

A sturdy brown tree trunk rises from a gentle sage-green hill at the bottom of the page and splits into seven main branches and a few smaller twigs that reach up and out across the page. The trunk and branches are one grouped object. Sixteen large, pointed autumn leaves are scattered along the branches, each with a thin rust outline and a soft pastel fill in pale peach, butter yellow, sage, or blush, light enough that pencil and pen show clearly. On the hill at the base of the tree sit a round orange pumpkin on the left and a white heirloom pumpkin with a small gourd on the right. The brand mark is printed in white on the grass.

Gratitude Tree Prompts for Different Ages

Some people freeze when faced with a blank leaf. A few prompts help:

  • Little children: a person, a pet, a food, a toy, a place.
  • School-age children: something that made you laugh, a friend, a teacher, a skill you learned.
  • Teenagers: a song, a moment this year, someone who had your back.
  • Adults: a kindness you received, a small daily pleasure, a lesson from a hard time.
  • Grandparents: a memory, a family tradition, the people at the table.

Using the Tree in a Classroom

Teachers can make the gratitude tree a whole-class project. Print one large tree for the wall and give each child a leaf to fill in, or print a page per child so they can take their tree home. It pairs nicely with a short discussion about what gratitude means and with a picture book about thankfulness. For young writers, let them draw on the leaves instead of writing.

The tree also makes a gentle activity for care homes, community centres and youth groups during November.

Making a Bigger Tree

For a wall display, print the PDF at 11 x 17 or larger at a print shop; the design is proportional and scales cleanly. You can also print extra blank leaves: open the template, delete the tree and the title, copy a leaf several times, and print a sheet of loose leaves to cut out and tape on once the printed leaves are full.

Customising the Tree in the Editor

The leaves are simple shapes, so you can change their colours to match your decor, make them all one colour for a more modern look, or add more leaves by copying one. The trunk and branches are grouped, so you can recolour the whole tree in one click, for example, to a softer grey-brown. Replace the title with your family name, such as The Morales Family Gratitude Tree, or the class name.

The pumpkins are editable vector artwork; recolour them from their swatches or remove them if you want more room on the grass for names.

Turning the Gratitude Tree into a Keepsake

Once every leaf is filled, the tree becomes a small piece of family history. Write the year and the names of everyone who contributed on the back, then frame it for the hallway or tuck it into a scrapbook. Some families photograph the finished tree and print it in a yearly photo book alongside pictures from Thanksgiving dinner. In a few years, children’s handwriting and the things they were thankful for tell their own story.

For grandparents who live far away, mail a copy of the finished tree with a note. It is a lovely way to include them in the holiday.

Gratitude Tree Questions

What should we write with?

Fine felt-tip pens and coloured pencils work best on the pastel leaves. Crayons work for younger children.

Can we cut out the leaves?

The leaves are printed in place on the branches, so there is nothing to cut. If you want loose leaves, print a second copy and cut those out.

What if we have more than sixteen people?

Let several people share a leaf, write small, or print two trees and display them side by side as a little orchard.

Gratitude grows when you give it a place to live. Print the tree, hang it where everyone can see it, and watch it fill with the things your family treasures most.
