Some evenings ask for a little glamour. The lights go low, the jazz comes up, and everyone arrives looking sharper than usual, holding a glass with an olive in it. A cocktail party is a celebration of style, and this Art Deco Invitation makes your guests feel dressed up the moment they open the envelope.

Gold Fans on Black

The 5 x 7 inch card is jet black. At the top, a large gold sunburst fan opens upward: alternating bright and soft gold rays, cut through by two concentric black arcs and anchored by a small gold disc, the unmistakable shape of 1920s design. Directly beneath the fan, a gold-outlined martini glass with a green olive and a cocktail pick seems to sit on the horizon of the sunburst.

A thin gold frame with diamond accents at each corner runs around the card, with a second, finer line inside it. The words are centred below the glass: You are cordially invited to a in gold capitals, then COCKTAIL in cream Cinzel, a classical Roman capital font, and Party in a sweeping gold Allura script. The details follow in Cinzel and Montserrat: Friday, December 4, 8 PM, THE GRAYSON PENTHOUSE, 1 HARBOUR VIEW, FLOOR 12, Black tie optional, signature martinis and jazz, and the R.S.V.P. line. A smaller gold fan echoes the top design at the foot, with the OTO logo in gold beneath it.

Decoding the Dress Code

The card suggests Black tie optional, and guests always want to know exactly what that means. A dress code line is one of the most useful things on an invitation, so here is a quick decoder you can share.

Dress codeFor menFor women
Black tieTuxedo, bow tie, dress shoesFloor-length gown or very formal cocktail dress
Black tie optionalTuxedo or dark suit with tieLong gown, dressy cocktail dress or elegant separates

Building a Signature Cocktail Menu

You do not need a full bar. Two signature cocktails, one non-alcoholic option, wine, and sparkling water are plenty for most parties. Choose drinks that can be made in batches. A classic martini (gin or vodka with dry vermouth, stirred and garnished with an olive) suits the card’s glass perfectly. A French 75 (gin, lemon, sugar and Champagne) feels celebratory. A sparkling mojito with lime, mint and soda keeps non-drinkers happy. Print a small menu card in the same black and gold, or write the drinks on a mirror with a chalk marker.

Making It Your Party

Every line of text is editable. Double-click to change the date, the venue, the dress code, and the R.S.V.P. If the evening celebrates something, add it below the title: In honour of Vivian’s 40th, Celebrating our engagement, or Ringing in the New Year.

The fans are each grouped, so they can be moved, resized, or recoloured as a unit; switch gold for silver for a winter party or rose gold for a birthday. The martini glass is a group of outline shapes; recolour the olive or swap the fill to pink for a cosmopolitan. The frame and corner diamonds are separate shapes you can recolour or remove. Fonts are Cinzel, Allura and Montserrat, all Google Fonts in the editor.

Setting the Art Deco Scene

  • Use black, gold and cream in tableware, napkins and balloons, matching the card.
  • Play swing, big band and modern jazz covers.
  • Set up a photo corner with a gold sequin backdrop, feather boas and long cigarette holders as props.
  • Serve canapés on mirrored trays: blinis with smoked salmon, devilled eggs, cheese puffs.
  • Use candlelight and warm bulbs; avoid bright overhead lights.

Glassware, Ice and the Home Bar

Nothing slows a cocktail party like running out of ice. Plan on about half a kilo of ice per guest, more in summer, and keep extra bags in a cooler. Martini and coupe glasses suit the Art Deco theme, but stemless wine glasses are sturdier and work for almost any drink. Hire glassware from a party rental shop if you need more than you own; it often arrives clean and goes back dirty. Set up the bar away from the entrance so arrivals do not create a bottleneck, and pre-batch your signature drinks in jugs so that a single helper can serve a crowd quickly. Lay out garnishes such as olives, lemon twists, cherries, and fresh mint in small bowls, and keep a stack of cocktail napkins within reach.

Occasions for Cocktail Hour

A cocktail party format suits many celebrations: a milestone birthday, a New Year’s Eve party, an engagement, a retirement, a company holiday party, or a gala fundraiser. It also makes a stylish rehearsal-dinner alternative. Because the card is black and gold, it feels both festive and grown-up, especially in winter.

Printing Black and Gold Beautifully

A solid black card needs a good printer. Download the PDF and print on heavy, smooth card stock; ask a print shop for rich black if you want the deepest result. For a luxurious finish, gold foil printing on the fans, frame, and title turns the invitation into a keepsake. On a home printer, the gold appears as a warm mustard-gold, still very elegant. For digital sharing, the PNG or JPG looks sharp on any screen.

Cocktail Party Questions

How long does a cocktail party last?

Usually two to three hours, often 8 to 11 PM. It is not a dinner, so serve plenty of substantial canapés.

How many drinks should I plan per guest?

A common estimate is two drinks in the first hour and one per hour after that.

What does “R.S.V.P.” stand for?

Répondez s’il vous plaît, French for please reply. Guests should let you know whether they are coming.

Can I use this card for a Great Gatsby party?

Absolutely. It is already Art Deco; change the dress code to Roaring Twenties attire.

Add your date, your venue, and your signature drink, and send it in a black envelope if you can find one. Cheers to an evening worth dressing up for.
