Going round the table to say what everyone is thankful for is a beloved tradition, and also a slightly terrifying one for shy guests and teenagers. This place card makes it easier. Each guest finds a card with their name and the words THIS YEAR I AM THANKFUL FOR, with two lines to write on. They fill it in before the meal, at their own pace, and share it at dessert, or simply leave it on the table for the host to read later.

How the Card Is Designed

It is a tent card, 3.5 x 4 inches flat, folding to 3.5 x 2 inches. The half facing the guest is cream. A mustard-yellow triangle fills its top right corner with a small rust maple leaf on it, as if a leaf has landed on the card. The guest’s name is set in bold navy Playfair Display at the top left (“Hannah” in the sample). Underneath, THIS YEAR I AM THANKFUL FOR runs in spaced rust capitals, followed by two soft grey writing lines and a small italic note: Write your note before dinner and share it at dessert.

The other half, printed upside down so it reads correctly once folded, is a deep navy panel. GIVE THANKS sits across it in tall mustard Abril Fatface capitals, with a grateful heart in pale italic underneath. A small mustard leaf sits in one corner, and the brand mark is tucked into the other in a muted tint. A dashed line across the middle marks the fold.

Prompts to Put on the Card

The sample prompt is: This year I am thankful for. It is open and works for everyone, but you can change it to suit your guests. Here are alternatives, grouped by who is at the table.

Running the Thankful Card Tradition

There are a few ways to use the cards, and each family settles into its own:

  • Before the meal: leave a pen beside each card. Guests fill them in while they wait for the turkey.
  • At dessert: go round the table and read them aloud, or have each person pass their card to the left and read their neighbour’s.
  • Anonymous: collect the cards in a basket after dinner and read them out without names. People are often braver when they know nobody will be called on.
  • Kept for next year: store the cards in an envelope labelled with the year. Reading last year’s cards before this year’s dinner is a lovely moment.

Adding Each Guest’s Name

Click the name and type the first guest’s name, then download. Repeat for every guest, changing only the name. Playfair Display is a fairly compact serif, so even longer names fit on one line at the default size. For couples who share a card, use both first names (Hannah & Luis) and reduce the font size slightly.

The writing lines stay blank so guests can write by hand. If you would prefer a printed note, for example, for a guest who cannot attend but sent a message, type it in a text box over the lines in a handwriting-style font.

Changing Colours to Match Your Table

Navy and mustard are a confident, slightly modern take on autumn colours. For a softer look, change the navy back panel to sage and the mustard to terracotta. For a classic table, try deep burgundy and gold. The mustard corner triangle and the leaves are simple shapes, so recolouring them takes a click each.

Printing, Scoring and Folding

Download the PDF and print at actual size on matte card stock, around 80 to 100 lb cover. A matte surface takes ballpoint and gel pens without smudging; glossy card does not. Cut along the edges, score along the dashed fold line with a bone folder or the back of a knife against a ruler, and fold so the printed sides face out. Make sure the cream side faces the guest’s seat.

Put a pen beside each card, or a small cup of pens in the middle of the table. Gold or navy gel pens look particularly nice on the cream card.

Keeping a Gratitude Card Archive

The cards become more meaningful every year you keep them. After dinner, collect them, write the year on the back of the stack and keep them in a labelled envelope or a small recipe box. Some families glue them into a scrapbook alongside a photo of the table; others punch a hole in the corner and keep them on a ring. When the next Thanksgiving comes round, read a few from previous years before the new cards are filled in. Children’s handwriting changes, grandparents’ wishes become precious, and you get a small history of what mattered to your family each year.

If you are hosting guests who will not be back next year, take a photo of the cards so the memories are not lost.

Thankful Card Questions

Is it suitable for kids?

Yes. For young children, change the prompt to something simpler and give them crayons. They can draw instead of write.

Can I use it at a school or office event?

It works well for classroom feasts and team lunches. Choose a light prompt, such as a win this year or a favourite moment.

Can I make the writing area bigger?

For more space, delete the italic note under the lines and move the two lines down to spread them further apart.

Gratitude is the reason for the holiday, and this little card gives it a place at every setting. Print one for each guest, add a pen, and see what your table writes.
