Every family has a Thanksgiving recipe that exists only in one person’s head, or on a stained index card in a kitchen drawer. Grandma’s stuffing. Uncle Joe’s sweet potatoes. The pie nobody else can get quite right. This Thanksgiving Recipe Card gives those recipes a proper home: a neat, printable card with room for ingredients, directions, and the name of the cook who made it famous.

Why Write Family Recipes on Cards

Recipes are some of the most precious things a family passes down, and also some of the easiest to lose. Writing them on matching cards does a few useful things:

  • it captures quantities and steps that are usually a bit of this and a handful of that;
  • it credits the person behind the dish, which means a lot to older relatives;
  • it lets you share the recipe with guests who ask for it at the table;
  • it builds, card by card, into a family cookbook.

Thanksgiving is the perfect time to start, because everyone is cooking their signature dishes and the recipe holders are usually in the same room.

A Card That Looks Like a Kitchen Classic

The card is 7 x 5 inches, landscape, a larger version of the classic recipe card that fits standard photo albums and recipe binders. Across the top runs a red and cream gingham strip, like a kitchen tablecloth, with a cream rounded label in the middle that says Family Recipe in red Satisfy script.

Under the strip, the recipe title sits in bold Playfair Display (Grandma June’s Cornbread Stuffing in the sample), with FROM THE KITCHEN OF and the cook’s name in small rust capitals beneath it. In the top right corner are three little boxes for SERVES, PREP, and COOK times.

The body splits into two columns separated by a thin vertical line. On the left, INGREDIENTS heads a list of nine ingredients written in Kalam, a friendly handwriting font, each on its own faint rule. On the right, DIRECTIONS heads five numbered steps, each with a rust circle holding the step number. A little rust leaf decorates the lower right corner of the recipe card, with our small brand mark opposite it on the left.

The Sample Recipe: Cornbread Stuffing

The card comes filled in with a simple cornbread and sausage stuffing, so you can see how a recipe fits. The ingredients are cornbread, dried bread cubes, breakfast sausage, onion, celery, butter, dried sage, chicken stock, and eggs. The directions walk through heating the oven, browning the sausage, softening the vegetables, mixing, adding the stock, and baking covered and then uncovered. It is a real, workable recipe, but feel free to replace it with your own.

Filling In Your Own Recipe

Every line is a separate text box. Click the title and type the dish name, then the cook’s name after FROM THE KITCHEN OF. Update the three boxes in the corner. For ingredients, click each line and type; if a line runs long, shorten it (2 cups chopped celery rather than two cups of finely chopped fresh celery). For directions, keep each step to one or two short sentences.

If your recipe has more than nine ingredients or five steps, you have two options:

  • reduce the font size slightly and add rows by copying an existing line;
  • use Add Page to make a second card for the rest, and label it page 2 in the title.

Recipe Writing Tips from Seasoned Cooks

  1. List ingredients in the order you use them.
  2. Write quantities in the units your family uses, and add the other unit in brackets if relatives live abroad.
  3. Say the size of the dish and the oven temperature in the first step.
  4. Describe what done looks like: golden brown, bubbling at the edges, firm to the touch.
  5. Add one personal note, such as Grandma always used day-old cornbread, because that is the part nobody else knows.

Printing and Storing the Cards

Download the PDF and print on a heavy matte card, at least 100 lb cover, so the card survives kitchen splashes. A 7 x 5 card fits two to a Letter sheet. For a more durable card, laminate it or slip it into a clear photo sleeve; then you can lay it right next to the mixing bowl.

Store finished cards in a 5 x 7 photo album, a recipe binder with 5 x 7 sleeves, or a small wooden recipe box. A stack of matching cards, each with a different family name at the top, quickly becomes a family heirloom.

Recipe Cards as Thanksgiving Gifts

A lovely tradition is to send guests home with the recipes they loved. Ask each cook to fill in a card before the holiday, print a few copies, and leave them by the door with the leftover boxes. Or collect every dish from the dinner, print a full set, and give it to each family as a small booklet after the holiday.

For a new family member, such as a son- or daughter-in-law, a set of the family’s Thanksgiving recipes is a warm and meaningful welcome gift.

Changing the Gingham and Colours

The gingham strip is one grouped object; recolour it to green and cream for a farmhouse look, or blue and white for a classic diner feel. The step circles, labels, and leaf share a rust colour that you can change in a few clicks. The rest of the card is cream, which prints well on any paper.

Turning Cards into a Family Cookbook

If you collect enough cards, you have a cookbook. Arrange them by course, add a cover page with a family photo, and print the set as a booklet through a print shop. Many families make one for a milestone birthday or a reunion. Because every card uses the same layout, the book looks polished without extra design work.

Recipe Card Questions

Can I add a photo of the dish?

Add a small rectangle from the Elements panel in the top right area and use Replace Image to drop in a photo; move the time boxes down a little to make room.

Is it only for Thanksgiving recipes?

Not at all. The gingham header suits any family recipe, from Sunday roast to birthday cake.

What size sleeves fit the card?

Standard 5 x 7 photo sleeves and recipe binder pockets fit it perfectly in landscape orientation.

The best Thanksgiving dishes deserve to outlive the people who first cooked them. Write the recipe down, print a card, and make sure it lands at the table for many years to come.
