Engineering students write reports that are judged like professional documents. A design project, a lab investigation, or a senior capstone report in electrical, computer, or mechanical engineering is expected to look like something a company could circulate: a report number, a clear title, an abstract, and a revision status. This cover is built for that audience. It borrows from two things engineers know well, the blueprint and the drawing title block, and pairs them with the conventions of IEEE-style technical writing.

Built Like an Engineering Drawing

The whole page is a dark navy blueprint. A faint white grid covers the top half, with heavier lines every fourth square like real drafting paper. Cyan circuit traces run in from the right edge, bend at 45 degrees, and end in small pads and component outlines. A report code, Technical Report · TR-2026-014, sits in cyan above the white title, set in Space Grotesk, a technical-looking typeface. Under the title, the department and institute appear in muted blue-grey. A translucent panel holds the abstract. At the bottom, an engineering title block, a real editable table, records who prepared the report and its status, just as a drawing sheet would.

What to Write in Each Title-Block Cell

The title block has two header rows and two value rows. Use them like this:

  • Prepared by: your name, or all authors separated by commas for a team report (sample: Rohan Mehta).
  • Student ID: your university number (sample: WIT-20311458).
  • Course: the course code and name (sample: ECE 410 Embedded Systems).
  • Supervisor: the professor or project supervisor (sample: Prof. Karen Liu).
  • Submitted: the submission date (sample: 12 December 2026).
  • Revision: the version of the document (sample: Rev. A · Final).

To edit the cells, select the table and use Edit Table Data. If your team has four members, add a row with Add Row, or list the names in one cell. Header and row colours can be changed from the table’s options, so the block can match a lighter or darker version of the page.

A Revision Field Is Not Just Decoration

Professional engineering documents track revisions because readers need to know they have the latest version. Get into the habit now. Mark early drafts as Rev. 0 · Draft for review, the version your supervisor comments on as Rev. A, and the final submission as Rev. B · Final or similar. It costs nothing and shows you understand document control, something employers mention when they talk about graduate engineers.

Writing an Abstract That Fits the Panel

The abstract panel holds about 40 words at the size shown, which is shorter than a journal abstract. Treat it as an executive summary: what you built or tested, the key result with a number, and what that number means. The sample reads: This report presents a battery-powered sensor node that measures soil moisture and temperature and reports over LoRaWAN.Simulated average current is 38 µA, giving an estimated three-year battery life. If your full abstract is longer, put a shortened version on the cover and the full abstract on the next page.

Report Numbering Ideas

Real organisations number reports so they can be filed and cited. You can invent a simple scheme for your course: TR for technical report, the year, and a sequence number, as in TR-2026-014. Lab groups sometimes use the course code, as in ECE410-G3-02. Keep the format consistent across every report you submit in a semester, and your work will look organised in a portfolio. When you later apply for internships, a folder of numbered, revision-controlled reports is a small but convincing sign that you already work the way engineering teams do. Write the same number in your file name, such as TR-2026-014_RevB.pdf, so the digital copy and the printed cover always match.

IEEE Formatting Reminders

A line near the bottom of the page reads Formatted to IEEE conference style · numbered references [1]. In IEEE style, sources are numbered in the order they are first cited, shown in square brackets, and listed in that order at the end. Authors’ first names are given as initials, article titles go in quotation marks, and journal names are italicised and often abbreviated. Figures and tables are numbered and captioned. If your report follows a different style, edit that line or delete it.

Adjusting the Circuit Art

The grid and the circuit traces are separate groups. Select the trace group to move it, recolour it, or delete it. Mechanical and civil engineers might prefer to remove the traces and keep only the grid, which reads as general engineering. The Page 1 of 24 label in the bottom left is plain text; update the count or delete it if your page numbering starts after the cover.

Printing a Dark Engineering Cover

The page is US Letter, 8.5 x 11 inches, with a full navy background. Full-bleed colour cannot be printed edge to edge on most office printers, which leave a narrow white border. That is fine for coursework. For a bound capstone report, use Download As PDF with bleed and crop marks turned on and send it to a print shop for edge-to-edge printing. If you are printing at home and want to save toner, consider submitting the cover digitally and printing the report body only.

Disciplines Beyond Electrical Engineering

The blueprint look works for computer engineering, mechatronics, robotics, aerospace, and physics-heavy reports. For software reports, the computer science project cover in this collection may suit you better; for architecture studios, try the blueprint architecture design report, which has an isometric building drawing instead of circuits.

Questions Engineers Ask

Does IEEE require a cover page?

IEEE conference papers do not use one, but university technical reports usually do. Follow your course rubric.

Can I add a university logo?

Yes. Upload it through the editor and place it in the top left above the report code, keeping it small.

What if my title is long?

The title box fits about three lines. Shorten the title or reduce its size slightly; avoid going below 18 points, so it still dominates the page.
