Juneteenth, on June 19, commemorates the day in 1865 when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, learned they were free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. It became a federal holiday in 2021, and many businesses, banks, and government offices now close to observe it. This US Letter sign celebrates Juneteenth with a design inspired by the Juneteenth flag. A deep blue upper half holds a large white starburst with a blue star at its centre, and a red curved horizon sweeps across the lower half. JUNETEENTH appears in bold white capitals, with Freedom Day in gold brush script. On the red half, the sign states that the business is closed, gives the observed date in large white capitals, and explains the meaning of the holiday before the reopening details and the business name.

Juneteenth 2027 and the Observed Date

In 2027, June 19 falls on a Saturday. When a federal holiday falls on a Saturday, it is observed on the preceding Friday, so the federal holiday is Friday, June 18. The sample sign shows Friday, June 18, with the business reopening on Monday, June 21. Check the date each year, since June 19 moves through the week.

Design Inspired by the Juneteenth Flag

The Juneteenth flag, created in 1997, features a white star surrounded by a starburst on a blue and red field divided by a curved arc. The star represents Texas and the freedom of African Americans in all fifty states, the burst represents a new beginning, and the arc represents a new horizon. This sign echoes those elements with a starburst, a blue upper field, and a red horizon.

Explaining the Meaning of Juneteenth

Many customers are still learning about Juneteenth. The sign includes a short explanation: in observance of Juneteenth, celebrating the end of slavery in the United States. This helps customers understand why you are closed and honours the significance of the day.
