Some homecomings deserve more than a hug at the airport. A loved one returning from deployment, a long stint abroad, a hospital stay, a gap year, or a semester away has been missed every single day. A Welcome Home Party turns that feeling into a celebration, and this invitation says it in big, bright letters on a string of bunting.

Bunting, a Photo and Balloons

The card is 5 x 7 inches with a warm cream background. Two strings of triangular bunting swing across the top. On the first, each flag carries one letter of WELCOME in white Lilita One; on the second, shorter string, the flags spell HOME. The flags alternate teal, golden yellow, coral, and navy, and the strings sag gently like real party bunting.

In the middle sits a big round photo slot with a white border and a golden-yellow ring behind it, ready for a photo of the person coming home. To the right, a cluster of five balloons in coral, teal, yellow, and navy is tied together with strings and a little coral knot. Below the photo, Welcome home, Marcus! is set in bold navy Lilita One, with the line Eighteen months away. One very big hug waiting. in grey italic. A teal panel across the bottom of the card carries the details: the date and time, the family home and address, a yellow line asking everyone to keep it a secret until he walks through the door, the RSVP, and the OTO logo.

Choosing the Homecoming Photo

Click the round photo and choose Replace Image to add your picture. The photo fills the circle, and the white border and yellow ring stay in place. A few ideas for the right photo:

  • A recent photo of them in uniform, on their travels, or at their new school.
  • A favourite family photo from before they left, as a reminder of what is waiting.
  • A video-call screenshot of everyone together, for a touch of humour.
  • A childhood photo, if the party is a big family affair.

Choose a photo where the face is centred, since the circle crops the corners.

Planning a Surprise Arrival

The sample card says Keep it a secret until he walks through the door! A surprise homecoming takes a little coordination. This step-by-step plan helps:

  1. Confirm the arrival time with someone who will be with the guest of honour, such as a partner, friend, or parent picking them up.
  2. Set the party start time at least an hour before the expected arrival, so everyone is in place.
  3. Ask guests to park around the corner so cars do not give the game away.
  4. Appoint a lookout who signals when the car arrives.
  5. Turn off the lights and quiet everyone down just before the door opens.
  6. Have someone ready with a camera to capture the moment.
  7. Keep a plan B: if the arrival is delayed, have food ready and a group chat to keep everyone updated.

If the person has been through something difficult, such as a long hospital stay, consider a calmer welcome with a smaller group instead of a jump-out surprise.

Editing the Flags, Colours and Words

Every text line is editable with a double-click, including the name, the subtitle, the date, the address, the secret line and the RSVP. The letters on the bunting are separate text objects sitting on top of the flags, so you could change WELCOME HOME to WELCOME BACK. If you change the number of letters, adjust the flags too.

The two bunting strings are each one grouped object, so you can recolour all the flags at once or ungroup them to change one flag. The balloon cluster is also grouped; recolour the balloons to the guest’s favourite colours, or to red, white and blue for a military homecoming. The teal panel and the yellow ring behind the photo are single shapes you can recolour in one click. The font is Lilita One for the bold lettering and Montserrat for the details, both in the editor’s font list.

Food, Decorations and a Personal Touch

A homecoming party should feel like home. Cook the guest of honour’s favourite meal, the one they have been dreaming about while away. Hang a big banner that matches the bunting on the card. Put up photos from their time away alongside family photos. A welcome home cake with their name piped on top, and a tub of their favourite ice cream never fail. Most importantly, leave space for them to rest; a long journey and a big emotional welcome can be tiring.

Printing and Sending Quietly

If the party is a surprise, send invitations privately by message or email rather than posting them on social media where the guest of honour might see them. Download a PNG or JPG for digital sharing, and a PDF if you want to print copies for older relatives or neighbours. A bright white card stock makes the bunting colours pop.

Welcome Home Party Questions

When should the party be?

Many families host on the day of arrival; others wait a few days so the person can rest first.

How many people should we invite?

Think about the person’s energy. A small family gathering is often better than a huge party after a long trip.

Can this card be used for a military homecoming?

Yes. Recolour the bunting to the service colours and write a line of thanks under the name.

What if the arrival date changes?

Military and travel dates often shift. Keep the date line flexible, or re-send the card with the new date.

Add their photo, write their name on the card, and get the bunting up. Somebody very special is almost home.
